If you
were just to glance at the cover of this book and decide not to read it, you
would surely miss out on a great work of fiction. While Chuck Graham has a subtitle on the book
“A Parable for Our Time”, let me assure you it goes deeper than you can
imagine. There is an allegory included
here and if you know the Scriptures, perhaps there will be parts that will stir
your memory of a passage or person mentioned in the Bible.
You
might think this is about the last days or perhaps very gloomy, but
consideration should be given to the hope it contains. There is a meaning the author reveals as to
the names of his characters, places, and more shared at the end of the
book. One character of the story is
named Sam. He is a young man, married,
with two sons. He works for a particular
company and is inexplicably summoned to a conference never held before, and he
isn’t the only one. Also going along is
a man many believed should have retired from the company a long time ago, but
he hasn’t. Three senior managers are
summoned as well; they are mysterious for many reasons that are gradually
revealed as the conference progresses.
The last one brought to the conference is an elderly lady who has
nothing to do with the business. Why is
she going?
Davidson picks them up and knows all about
them, their stories, life, work history…everything. The structure for the
conference center is huge and yet no one can walk about without an escort. Walls in the building move as particular
people approach them. There is a mystery
at this center, but what is it? Does
every person who attends return to where they were summoned from? Why is there a report from the senior
managers plus two of the other three guests compiled from the least experienced
among them?
As I
began reading the story, I was wondering how it would evolve. As one progresses, each page begins to add up
to an ending that will catch you off guard.
Some parts reminded me of different stories, persons, and teachings from
both the Old and New Testament. When I
read the last page, I was further enlightened by the author as to his reason
for what he wrote as well as what he hoped to convey. You won’t regret getting a copy and reading this
as there are more books to come from this author.
My rating is 5 stars.
