In South Dakota, in the year 1906, many ranchers were living off the land as well as helping anyone in need.  Two single men years before had dug for gold and used the money for land looking to the future of ranching together.  Did it work out?  When the mine collapsed, one man looked to start building the ranch while the other wanted adventure.  As a result, they parted ways; however, the deed remained in both names.  It took time for Ivar to forgive his friend, Adam, though hearing from him sparingly through the ensuing years, Ivar held onto the hope that eventually the dream of co-owning and operating the ranch would become a reality.  Years pass and both men die after raising families in different states and in different ways.  Someone shows up one day that will change what is known by the Engstrom family as the Bar E.
The children of Ivar and Mavis have never been told of the deed in case no one ever showed up to claim the Lockwood half, but Cassie does show up.  Cassie travels to the area, bringing with her the deed her father, Adam, gave her for half ownership of Bar E.  She comes with a few friends from a Wild West Show in the hopes of fulfilling her father’s unrealized dream.  How would the family react to her showing up?  Cassie has known how to trick ride on her pony and shoot since she was six.  Now, living out in the middle of the country, how was she going to provide for all her needs?
One night a couple of riders come and shoot up the cabin where Cassie and her little traveling family live.  In the midst of the fight, Cassie is wounded.  Though eventually those who did the shooting are caught, Cassie loses more than she bargained for.  Many neighbors are so helpful during her recovery, but Mavis’s youngest son, Lucas, has plans that Cassie isn’t sure she wants to be part of.  On top of this, Cassie is overwhelmed with all she must learn in order to survive in her new home.  Will she be able to do so?
With many wonderful characters and words that paint stunning pictures in the mind of the readers, Laura Snelling shows her gift of storytelling.  Through the many characters, scenes, plots, and subplots, she keeps the reader turning pages.  While being a work of fiction, the Lord is shown as the answer, rock, and provider that readers can know today.  As the weather seasons are preparing to change, cuddle in a chair, bask in the sun, and get lost in a wonderful story.
My rating is 4 stars.
