Author:  Agatha Christie
Pages:  286
Year:  2014 (first William Morrow paperback published)
Publisher:  William Morrow
An older gentleman dies suddenly, leaving his fortune to be divided amongst his relatives.  After his funeral, his family is gathered together when his sister blurts out that she thinks her brother was murdered.  No one takes her seriously it seems until she is murdered the very next day.  The lawyer in charge of the brother’s estate begins to investigate on his own, but soon realizes he is out of his element.  He contacts his old friend, Hercule Poirot, to help discover if, in fact, his client was murdered and who murdered his sister.
He inserts himself into the family and has trouble eliminating any of the other family members as suspects.  It appears no one has a verifiable alibi.  As Poirot continues to question the family, he begins to make the killer more nervous, making a mistake that allows Poirot to narrow the field.  The family dynamics and the different characters make the plot interesting with plenty of red herrings to keep readers guessing.
This story was just a great “whodunit”!  I had read the story many years ago and when I read it again, I enjoyed it just as much the second time.  I didn’t figure out the murderer the first time or the second time, but was completely involved in the story and was sorry to see it end.  The characters are quintessentially British and Hercule Poirot is at his finest.   The plot is interesting and will keep readers tuned in from beginning to end.  This is one Agatha Christie mystery readers will not want to miss.  I hope in the future to re-read other of these wonderful classic mysteries and post my reviews here.
My rating is 5 stars.
