Tess Villanova is excited to start her first day as a detective.  She has worked her way up from beat cop under her Uncle Gordon’s mentorship.  She is assigned as a partner to the new guy in town, Logan McMillan.  The first week on the job and the partners face a growing attraction to one another as well as their first homicide.  The victim is soon identified as similar to three others over the last several years.  Tess fears their serial killer is back, but in reality he never left; he just kept quiet the past few years.  One of the serial killer’s victims was Tess’s best friend, Samantha.  She has been working on solving her murder for almost 10 years with no success.  When she is frustrated, she can usually ease that by working on her current quilting project.  Her aunt, whom she is close to, has taught her this skill.
Logan McMillan has moved to St. Augustine, Florida after wrapping up another serial murder case in Chicago.  He needed a change of scenery after the death of his best friend from cancer.  Logan has no qualms about having a female partner and knows Tess is competent and able to perform her job.  He learns of Samantha’s murder, as well as the other victims, and hopes he can bring fresh eyes to view old evidence.  Logan longs to spend time with Tess off-duty.  He also begins to realize he has been keeping God at a distance due to his anger over his best friend’s death and that he needs to make a change in that regard.  Tess begins remembering some things that happened around the time of Samantha’s murder, and as they follow the clues, the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place.  Can they catch a killer before he strikes again?
This is a really good mystery as well as a romantic story.  I loved the characters of Tess and Logan.  Logan was such a thoughtful, compassionate and caring man.  Tess’s dedication to her aunt, her friend Samantha, justice and God were also admirable.  The story has great characters, a good plot and action to keep the story moving along at a good pace.  This is a very enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.  Don’t miss this one!
