Jupiter Winds by C. J. Darlington

Title:  Jupiter Winds Author:  C. J. Darlington Pages:  300 Year:  2014 Publisher:  Mountainview Books I find out about authors and novels in many ways.  My introduction to C. J. Darlington was through Mountainview Books.  They offer books that are filled with wonderful tales that weave in the essence of a personal faith in God alone.  When I read the synopsis of Jupiter Winds, I was intensely drawn to the book.  As I began reading, I quickly lost track of time and never wanted to stop reading! The tale is about a family named Alexander whose faith grounded them and helped them discern the growing evil happening on planet earth.  The family had gotten separated by events outside their control that will thoroughly entertain the audience as they read about each family member’s adventure. The evil pervading earth is by a group named Mazdaar that originally used drones to bring people under submission.  Their ambitions led to them making drones of humans shortly after their death and the…

A Stitch in Crime by Cathy Elliott

Title:  A Stitch in Crime Author:  Cathy Elliott Pages:  240 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Abingdon Press Fiction can be fun to read when the subject is light, entertaining with just enough of a mystery.  A Stitch in Crime is one of those books because it also brings to it a small town feel.  The name of the local group of quilters, which I won’t spoil for readers by naming, was quite unique to be sure.  What was even more intriguing were the different characters lives and interactions, which I am sure can easily be seen in reality. The quilting arena is far more than I ever knew it could be, with the various names and styles of quilts.  The one involved in the story is of historic value and someone in the community thinks it holds monetary value as well, so when the local museum puts it on display behind glass and locked nobody anticipates it being taken.  Through many different twists of the plot the author leads the reader on a chase to figure out whom the culprit or culprits are and if…

Like a Flower in Bloom

Title:  Like a Flower in Bloom Author:  Siri Mitchell Pages:  368 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Bethany Siri Mitchell shares with us a very unique tale about botanists, expectations of women during the Victorian era and finding one’s purpose.  Those few topics alone create a story which at times was really fun to read and other times caused me to imagine myself living during that era in England.  Today women enjoy the freedom to choose from many options and open doors where they blossom.  In the novel, Charlotte descends from a long line of male botanists whose published works were highly valued.  However, she soon learns that if she submits any writing in her own name it is declined.  She decides to resubmit her work using her father’s name. When her uncle decides it is time for her to enter society, Charlotte is beside herself as she has no knowledge of expectations or the way one handles conversation in polite society.  Charlotte depends upon another young female neighbor to help her le…

At Home in Last Chance

Title:  At Home in Last Chance Author:  Cathleen Armstrong Pages:  304 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Revell The story began in Welcome to Last Chance, continued in One More Last Chance, now continues with At Home in Last Chance.  The novels focus on a small town that closes up at night; people don’t lock their doors and know each other’s business.  The characters readers met in book one are continued to be enjoyed through all three novels.  In each book, one character is the center of the writing as each learns how to live again when they felt as if they were beyond one more chance. In this latest installment, we are following Chris’s younger sister Kaitlyn who we met early in the books.  She has abandoned her daughter Olivia to her brother’s care so she can take off to live.  Kaitlyn is a single mom and a very young woman who feels as if she can’t enjoy living if she always has to take care of her daughter.  Now, she finds herself once again in Last Chance, working for her brother in his …

The Sinner's Garden

Title:  The Sinners’ Garden Author:  William Sirls Pages:  401 Year:  2013 Publisher:  Thomas Nelson This is another fantastic book by William Sirls!  If you haven’t read his first book, The Reason, you’re missing out on one of the best books I’ve ever read.  This second fictional entry is also exceptional.  This book is set in Benning Township, Michigan.  A flashback begins the book as the prologue then, 11 years later, the story begins.  There is also an author’s note and reading group guide in the back of the book. Gerald Ripley, or Rip, is an ex-con released from prison a couple of years ago.  He found God in prison and now tries to live as a God-fearing man.  He still has struggles with his temper, but he knows it and is “working on it” as he tells others.  He is extremely close to his nephew, Andy and spends a lot of time with him.  Andy’s father is out of the picture, so Rip is in every sense a father to Andy.  He teaches Andy about God and takes him to church, but Rip tries t…

Love Gently Falling

Title:  Love Gently Falling Author:  Melody Carlson Pages:  160 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Center Street Melody Carlson shares a tale with readers about a young woman who works hard and looks like she has achieved success, so why does Rita still feel empty?  Then Rita receives a call that her mother in Chicago is in the hospital.  With the help of a roommate, travel plans are made and by that evening Rita is back in the cold of Chicago from her warm California condo.  What starts as a hard couple of days concerning her mother actually starts Rita down memory lane when she assumes responsibility for her mother’s failing hair salon. Now, let me assure you that I have not divulged much of the story.  It is the proverbial “tip of the iceberg” as there is a lot more readers will discover!  I sat down one afternoon simply enjoying this story of a young woman who finds enjoyment in being back in Chicago helping her family.  The author writes in such a way that the interaction between characte…

Winds of Freedom

Title:  Winds of Freedom (Kate Neilson Novel #2) Author:  Rebecca Carey Lyles Pages:  366 Year:  2013 Publisher:  Perpedit Ink The characters first introduced to us in book one of the series, Winds of Wyoming, continue in this story that mainly focuses on Amy a friend of Kate’s from their days in Patterson Prison.  There are several threads that run through the story such as human trafficking, Alzheimer’s, running a ranch and companionship.  Faith is the most forthright theme in the story as characters learn to pray and believe that while circumstances are dark, God is with those in the brothels. Kate is trying to emotionally recover from learning she will never have children the normal way, but God is working on Kate’s heart.  Kate found a box that has pictures and such from her childhood that was found in her aunt’s attic and brings both anticipation and wariness about the contents.  Laura, who is Kate’s mother in-law and widowed now for two years, chooses to begin a friendship wit…

Winds of Wyoming

Title:  Winds of Wyoming (Kate Neilson Series, Book 1) Author:  Rebecca Carey Lyles Pages:  416 Year:  2012  Publisher:  Stonehouse Ink Some time has passed since I read this novel so before reading the sequel, Winds of Freedom, by the same author I curled up to read and refresh my memory of the tale.  The main female character is Kate Neilson who after losing both her parents and brother was shifted from foster home to foster home.  Though she was placed in homes she never felt like the people really cared, loved or wanted her to be around.  When the system failed to take care of her, Kate embarked on a road of self-destruction that finally led her to prison for five years where she earned a college degree.  Now, Kate is leaving Pittsburgh to live and work on a ranch for her required internship.  The ranch that hired her is called Whispering Pines, and it is here that Kate’s past would crash into her present possibly irrevocably negatively impacting her future. Laura and her son Mi…

The Evangelism Study Bible

Title:  The Evangelism Study Bible (NKJV) Pages:  1564 Year:  2014 Publisher:  Kregel The first few pages are dedicated to a List of Features that correlates subjects and Scripture references from each book in the entire Bible.  When readers go to those pages, an article is inserted right near or by the Scripture that contains the subject matter.  Please remember to use discernment when reading anything written by man as only the Bible’s words are 100% without error.  There are cross references located between the two columns of the Word on the pages.  The additional footnotes are again commentary written by man and not necessarily accurate. Please take a minute to read the Preface before proceeding further in the book to gain an understanding of the way this version is put together and the aim of the editors.  The way this book is laid out is to aid others in sharing the Gospel or for seekers to learn truth when alone or in a small group.  At the end of each article is a simple pray…

The Truth bu C. N. Bring

Title:  The Truth (Celia Kelly #3) Author:  C.N. Bring Pages:  292 Year:  2014 Publisher:  Bad Day Books This is another fantastic novel by CN Bring!  This time Celia Kelly is called to take a look at a bomb site as the culprit is someone from her former case involving the Pact.  Celia begins to track him and involves her steadfast SEAL team as well.  There are many ins and outs involved with a lot of the characters from the prior two books making appearances in this third one.  It was like a family reunion as I read about these familiar characters and got to know a little bit more about their lives, their characters and their personalities.  There were a few new characters introduced, too.  Celia’s personal life takes a decided upswing.  Her secretary Gwen is involved in the investigation, voices her usual sense of humor and is game to do just about anything to help Celia.  Georgie, Celia’s assistant, is also in protection mode where Celia is concerned and is willing to go to jail f…

To Save Her Child

Title:  To Save Her Child (Love Inspired Suspense Alaskan Search & Rescue Book #2) Author:  Margaret Daley Pages:  224 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Love Inspired Before I share my thoughts on this novel, let me share with you that I didn’t read the first novel and still enjoyed the tale immensely!  I love to read Margaret Daley’s novels that capture my attention from the first page until the very last sentence.  To Save Her Child is set in Alaska, which is a state I long to visit and have read many inspiring stories set in wilderness of Alaska.  The tale is about a young single mother named Ella who is raising her son alone due to a divorce she had to seek because of the abuse in the marriage.  Another reason for her divorce was her ex-husband’s illegal business dealings that put the whole family in serious danger.  Ella is extra careful to keep to herself and thoroughly check out any place where her son is getting an education or being cared for while she is at work.  Ella’s job is …

New Inspiring & Intriguing Novel: Soul Painter by Cara Luecht

Title:  Soul Painter Author:  Cara Luecht Pages:  288 Year:  2014 Publisher:  White Fire Publishing What an epic tale!  At first glance it seemed like there wasn’t much to draw the reader’s eye to the page, but how deceiving that turned out to be!  The further I progressed in the book, the deeper I was drawn to what was happening in Chicago in the late 1800s where the author sets the stage.  Miriam is the main female character of the novel.  She is living alone above a warehouse where her father once ran a business.  By all accounts she is a hermit, refusing to interact with society or even enter a church as the last time she was in the local cathedral was to attend her mother’s funeral. From her window on the second floor, Miriam watches children and then takes paints their faces on the canvas of her picture, perhaps even what she feels how their future might turn out.  Miriam is not always sure what her paintings mean exactly just that until she puts what is within her on canvas sh…

Ted Dekker's: A. D. 30

Title:  A. D. 30 Author:  Ted Dekker Pages:  432 Year:  2014 Publisher:  Center Street When I opened the book and read “My Journey into A. D. 30” written by the author, I have to say my heart resonated with what he wrote.  Ted Dekker writes very transparently in this section.  Let me give you a sample to help you capture the heart set forth, “For ten years I dreamed of entering the life of Jesus through story, not as a Jew familiar with the customs of the day, but as an outsider, because we are all outsiders today.  I wanted to know what He taught about how we should live; how we might rise above all the struggles that we all face in this life, not just in the next life after we die.” (pg V)  Well, how did that just impact you? Readers who are familiar with the writing of Dekker might be surprised when discovering a very unique writing that is unlike what the author has shared before.  As a reviewer it is difficult to even know how to capture how the story touched my heart, emotions …
