This first book in the Keys of Promise series from Christine Johnson is set in the year 1850.  I enjoy historical fictional tales as I always learn something new about things of the past, and this story is no exception.  With ship wreckers, family secrets and romance, this story is sure to please readers.
Rourke O’Malley is a licensed ship wrecker operating off the coast of Florida.  He has strict rules to follow and must make court appearances to settle cargo legally obtained from a wrecked ship.  He has used his father’s ship for the last ten years, but is beginning to think he needs a new career.  He has almost enough saved to provide for his future wife.  He hopes that will be Elizabeth Benjamin, but he hasn’t seen her for four years after her abrupt departure for South Carolina.
Elizabeth Benjamin fled her beloved home in the Florida Keys after a devastating accident cripples her younger brother.  She is guilt ridden over her role in this accident.  She fled home at the request of her parents to go to South Carolina to find a suitable husband as there are no men her social equal in the Keys.  She leaves her heart with Rourke in the Keys and rejects every suitor for the time she is away.  She now arrives home after the death of her mother a few months prior.  Her father doesn’t expect her, but she just knows he and her brother need her now to run the household.  What she doesn’t bargain for is her father and great-aunt forcing her to accept courtship and marriage to a man she doesn’t love and can’t stand to be around.  She will always love Rourke and will not allow herself to be forced into an unwanted marriage, but the revelation of a family secret might change her outlook.
This is a sweet romance with a little bit of mystery and tension woven into the mix.  I loved the scene where Elizabeth comes to the realization that to prosper and live life she must forgive.  This proves a bitter pill to swallow at first, but she asks God’s help to make it so and receives peace in exchange.  I also enjoyed learning more about the Florida Keys and the job of legitimate licensed ship wreckers.  I’m excited for the next book in the series and look forward to reading it!
My rating is 5 stars out of 5.
