Title: Through Waters Deep (Waves of Freedom #1)
Author: Sarah Sundin
Mary Stirling is a secretary at the Boston Naval Yard in 1941. She loves her job and is comfortable being “invisible” or behind the scene. She never wants to draw attention to herself as she is fearful of experiencing pride, which can lead to humiliating events. Mary knows this from her past when she experienced such humiliation from firsthand knowledge. She runs into an old friend from high school, Jim, who has just arrived in town, having recently graduated from the Naval Academy. Mary agrees to show him around Boston and they both indulge their love of history. While spending time together, they also encourage one another. Mary discusses the strange happenings at the naval yard with Jim as she diligently records conversations as she overhears them. She is determined to solve the case and bring the saboteur to justice.
Jim Avery is new to town and to the Navy. His philosophy of life is that he “floats” in whatever direction life takes him. He isn’t bold or demanding. He lets others or situations determine his path. He runs into Mary and soon is enjoying more and more time in her company. He soon ships out for a mission escorting ships to Great Britain, leaving Mary behind. He realizes how much he misses her and wants to pursue a relationship with her, but he isn’t sure what to do. Should he even be thinking about starting a relationship with Mary when the country is on the brink of war and he will soon be right in the midst of it on the sea?
Great story! Both characters suffered scars from past incidents that left them fearful of making waves or drawing attention to themselves. Through their learning to trust God in every circumstance and place their cares with Him, they both gained freedom from their fears. In the midst of dire straits, they both prayed and placed their trust in God that no matter the outcome they were trusting in Him. What inspiration! This is a wonderful beginning to this new series, which continues in the summer of 2016 with the release of book two. I can’t wait!
