A Season to Wed

Title:  A Season to Wed (Three Winter Love Stories) Author:  Rachel Hauck, Cindy Kirk, Cheryl Wyatt Pages:  336 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Zondervan My rating is 5 stars. Love at Mistletoe Inn In this novella a wonderful, single, elderly woman named Verna has in her heart adopted two people, Hope and John.  Verna is my favorite character because of her love, no nonsense yet gentle approach and giving heart.  In the tale two, young, impulsive teenagers make an adult decision to marry in a different state now meet again for the first time in ten years.  Prior to this, Hope ran out of the chapel no longer wanting to be married and John left town.  Now they reunite in a tale of redemption, forgiveness, love and faith. A Brush with Love I cannot help but think this novella will touch the very heart of any reader who is willing to open their heart to the Story behind this story.  The main female lead is a woman named Ginger who suffered a tragedy as a young preteen and has lived with the outcom…

The Allepo Code

Title:  The Aleppo Code (The Jerusalem Prophecies #3) Author:  Terry Brennan Pages:  384 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Kregel Publications First off the mark, I would strongly encourage readers to read book one, The Sacred Cipher as well as book two, The Brotherhood Conspiracy before tackling this third book in The Jerusalem Prophecies series.  The story in book three picks up right where book two ended, so without reading the prior two books I think it would be hard to really get into this story. Tom Bohannon and his team of friends are in Israel mourning the death of some of their colleagues and friends when something stunning is discovered.  They thought their mission was over, but now they find out what they have previously unearthed is not all there is to the story.  Their lives are still in danger and so is the state of world if they believe what has just been revealed.  There is a potential weapon that could wield power and enable world domination.  The source is the staff of Aaron …

AN Endless Christmas (A Novella) byCynthia Ruchti

Title:  An Endless Christmas (A Novella) Author:  Cynthia Ruchti Pages:  240 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Worthy Inspired My rating is 5+ stars. Let me tell you this story brought a few tears to my eyes and a few laughs as well.  For me, the main theme is legacy along with passing down traditions or changing them which brings new life.  When the matriarch and patriarch of the family were saying goodnight to their growing family who came to celebrate Christmas, the patriarch prayed a blessing over each person.  Now, to me, that is one special and meaningful action worth repeating.  It doesn’t have to be just the man in the family; it can be the woman too as I have prayed blessings over my sons. The two main characters in the novella are Katie and Micah who have known each other for years. When Katie was proposed to, she couldn’t accept Micah’s offer until they had time to talk through what she just learned about her ancestry.  Katie thought that since hardly anyone stayed married in her fam…

Keeping Christmas by Dan Walsh

Title:  Keeping Christmas Author:  Dan Wlash Pages:  224 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Revell My rating is 5 stars. What are some holiday traditions you grew up with or do now with your family?  For me, when I was little we would have dinner, choose one present to open and then go to midnight Mass, return home and then in the morning open gifts.  Our family at one time was big with lots of extended members and friends who would gather in my parents’ home and what fun we would have! What great memories!  Now many of them are gone and sometimes the holidays are bittersweet, remembering the best of times and yet a smaller family unit. Life changes for all of us and in the book Dan Walsh shares a tale of parents who are not only empty nesters, but unlike previous holidays their kids cannot travel to be with them this year.  Judith, who is their mom, enters a time of depression and cannot seem to shake it though she prays for God to help her move forward.  Her husband Stan doesn’t seem to be as…

Every Girl Gets Confused

Title:  Every Girl Gets Confused (A Bride With Style #2) Author:  Janice Thompson Pages:  336 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Revell My rating is 5 stars. We are introduced to a whole set of characters in book one of the series titled, Every Bride Needs A Groom, which is set in Texas.  The characters come from a variety of denominational backgrounds, personalities and the cheering for either the Mavericks or Spurs!  In book two, we learn how love knows no boundaries such as age, monetary classification, along with some of the funniest lines I have read in awhile! The best aspect of the second book is the example of sticking together as a spiritual family regardless of the denominational affiliation.  Another is how in time as parents age and children are learning to fly on their own as adults, old and new traditions can weave together to gain the best memories.  I laughed a lot as I read the novel.  Some of the actions, words or thoughts of the octogenarians were too funny like when they fac…

Stealthy Steps (Nanostealth #1)

Title:  Stealthy Steps (Nanostealth #1) Author:  Vikki Kestell Pages:  298 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Faith-Filled Fiction My rating is 5 stars. What a brilliant and well-crafted story that will definitely keep you enraptured and turning pages until you either have to take a break or finish the book!  I simply sat down and over a couple of days lost myself in the multilayered, suspense-filled thriller written by Vikki Kestell, who is a new author to me. She has written other books if you look her up on Amazon.  Coming soon will be book one, Tabitha, from another new series called Girls from the Mountain.  In 2016, book two in the Nanostealth series will be released titled, Stealth Power. In this story, there are two parties who are vying for the scientifically created Nanomites.  One group is the military of the facility housing the science experiments run by a woman, General Cushing, who is nicknamed Shark Face.  The other side is the creator of the Nanomites, Dr. Bickel. Gemma is work…

The Christmas Joy Ride by Melody Carlson

Title:  The Christmas Joy Ride Author:  Melody Carlson Pages:  176 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Revell My rating is 4 stars. The setting of the story begins in Chicago right before Christmas.  A wonderful 86-year-old lady named Joy wants to spread Christmas joy along route 66.  Miranda, a young divorcee just returning from visiting her sister, sees Joy packing all these large tubs with names on them.  Soon, before Miranda knows what hit her, she joins Joy on the ride, learning to drive an RV.  Hopefully, Joy will see life come into Miranda’s eyes again.  You see Miranda has no members of her family living close by, Joy is moving, the house is in foreclosure and Miranda has no job. The novel then leads readers on a heartfelt journey into some of the lives of various people who connected with Joy via her website.  Throughout the tale readers are reminded of ways to share joy with others and not to be as self-absorbed as society tends to live life.  I loved this elderly character and her hea…

The Devotional for Women

Title:  The Devotional for Women Author:  Rhonda Harrington Kelley & Dorothy Kelley Patterson Pages:  768 Year:  2015 Publisher:  B & H Books My rating is 4 stars. Here is a devotional that doesn’t spew platitudes, but encourages women in their walk with the Lord.  One devotion I read wasn’t just about prayer, but also placed a letter of Paul in its historical context.  Read the Scripture portion placed underneath the title for the day’s devotion.  Use whatever version you are comfortable with, then there is space where women can write thoughts, prayers, questions, etc. Personally, I would have liked to see more thought-provoking writing beyond the couple of minutes that it takes to read at its current length.  I would suggest not writing in the book as the ink might bleed through the pages plus the advantage of using a notebook means no shortage of room to write what the Lord places on your heart or whatever you wish to express to Him. Use the devotional at a moment to reene…

Sky Latern by Matt Mikalatos

Title:  Sky Lantern Author:  Matt Mikalatos Pages:  240 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Howard Books My rating is 5 stars. When I learned who the author was of Sky Lantern I knew I wanted to read it as Matt writes with lots of heart and soul.  I knew nothing about sky lanterns until I saw them in a few movies and my curiosity was sparked.  What is shared is a story of a young lady who lost her father to cancer and part of her way of expressing her heart was writing a simple note and sending it off on a lantern. I believe that God, who is in control of all things, made sure the lantern came down in Matt’s yard.  He is a father of three daughters.  Matt places an open letter on his blog, hoping to connect with the girl who sent the lantern.  Anyone who wishes to read the letter that sets the adventure in motion can read it online. What is so astounding is the number of people that were touched and encouraged when Matt set out to meet with the girl.  When you get the book, plan on being touched…

Intertwined by Jennifer Slattery

Title:  Intertwined Author:  Jennifer Slattery Pages:  317 Year:  2015 Publisher:  New Hope Publishers My rating is 5 stars. The story is definitely a heart-tugging, attention-grabbing, emotional rollercoaster kind of novel.  The main female character is named Tammy.  She finds her marriage falling apart, single-parenting is more than a challenge, her work as an organ procurement coordinator fulfilling and she seeks to speak the gospel message to her clients. Nick is a divorcee who loses his firstborn son in an accident, which is how his and Tammy’s paths cross again.  They had not seen each other since high school ten years ago.  Nick is dealing with grief and an ex-wife who is keeping their other son away from him as she blames him for the death of their first son. I found the themes of prayer, leaning on the Lord, forgiveness, trust and more very refreshing to see in the tale.  The author shows us through other minor characters what unforgiveness, bitterness and other unresolved …

Another Way Home (Chicory Inn #3)

Title:  Another Way Home (Chicory Inn #3) Author:  Deborah Raney Pages:  304 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Abingdon Press My rating is 5+ stars. We met the Whitman family in the first book of the series, Home to Chicory Lane, followed by Two Roads Home.  In each story, we are given a bird’s-eye view into the various issues some of the grown Whitman children have faced along with how they interact and the running of the inn.  Here, in the third book, the author tackles a couple of hard issues such as domestic abuse, infertility, adoption, marriage and faith.  I was really grabbed by the heart when Danea continued to be disappointed about not getting pregnant even when spending so much money. As God opens her eyes, she decides to volunteer at a home for domestically fractured families, meeting a woman named Misty.  When Danea and her husband Dallas willingly take Misty’s son into their home over Thanksgiving, there comes a point when it becomes evident that Misty is in trouble.  She doesn’t …

A Reason to Stay

Title:  A Reason to Stay (A Texas Gold Novel #3) Author:  Kellie Coates Gilbert Pages:  336 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Revell My rating is 4 stars. The other two novels in this series are, A Woman of Fortune and Where Rivers Part.  Each book can be read as a stand-alone, so if you dislike one you can try another.  Why do I suggest trying another?  Well, A Woman of Fortune wasn’t bad, but it just didn’t draw me in whereas Where Rivers Part captured my heart.  Now, with A Reason to Stay, it was a little hard to read though not due to the author’s writing.  There is a scene in chapter two that unfortunately is reminiscent of an actual event where a shooter took the life of a reporter, cameraman and injured the woman being interviewed.  For me that was very hard to read even though in a fictional world and with made up characters.  I don’t think the author intended to hurt anyone by including this scene in her novel, but it might be hard for some to read. The main female character is Faith …

Meet Mysteries In Action Author C. N. Bring

The cave is dark and damp. A tall gaunt man in an oversized t-shirt and corduroys, tip-toes next to his meddlesome Great Dane. As they round the corner a ghostly figure appears; but in their haste to get away they all collide and Shaggy and Scooby Doo see it’s not really a ghost at all. That was my first taste of mystery and suspense. I was only six years old when I discovered that suspense is built upon carefully placed clues. These breadcrumbs provide mysterious tales with logical explanations. There were three constants growing up in my house- God, Country, and mysteries. My mother had the entire set of Agatha Christie, the complete set of Nancy Drew and too many other mystery authors to name. I also grew up in a Christian home and had family members who had served in the military. How did I process all of this? The Celia Kelly Series. Because of my love for books, writing seemed to be the best creative medium for me. Although it was actually cinema that inspired me to create my firs…

Wicked Women of the Bible by Ann Spangler

Title:  Wicked Women of the Bible Author:  Ann Spangler Pages:  224 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Zondervan My rating is 4 stars. The first point Ann brings to light is both the negative definition of the word “wicked” and the way it is used as slang.  Such as “that movie was wicked I want to see it again!”  So the characters we learn about in the study are those women who were wicked and displeased God.  We also learn of “wickedly” awesome women we may want to be like as we learn from them in the Bible. I learned Ann has written other books along this line and that she isn’t a trained theologian, but a woman who desires to help women draw near to the Author of the Bible.  Like Ann shares with us, in ancient times stories were passed down orally from one generation to the next.  God in His sovereignty in His time took the oral tradition and brought it to print down through generations to today.  What a God He is who loves us before we loved Him, and He continues to invite us to sit at His …

The Bishop's Son

Title:  The Bishop’s Son Author:  Kelly Irwin Pages:  368 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Zondervan My rating is 3 stars. The Amish of Bee County series began with the novel, The Beekeeper’s Son; here is the sequel to that story, The Bishop’s Son.  Readers can look forward to the next novel in the series in 2016 titled, The Saddlemaker’s Son. There are two young men interested in the main female character named Leila.  Jesse, though a bishop’s son, hasn’t yet committed himself to the Amish life or church as he continues to enjoy his freedom.  Will is committed to the Amish way wholeheartedly and is interested in Leila as well.  Jesse wants to show Leila a different world than her Amish community, and Will wants her to remain close to the community even though she is interested in working outside the Amish village. Kelly Irwin writes interesting novels though sometimes the ending is quite predictable.  What brings tension into the story isn’t just two young men interested in one girl, but the…

: A Father’s Second Chance (Love Inspired)

Title:  A Father’s Second Chance (Love Inspired) Author:  Mindy Obenhaus Pages:  224 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Love Inspired My rating is 5 stars. I loved this story!  There is a young woman entrepreneur who takes over her grandmother’s restaurant, making some of the locals repeat customers for some special cooking.  Celeste is the lady who loves to cook and is always looking for ways to grow her business.  Celeste never feels close to her mother due to the fear of never living up to perceived expectations. Gage is a divorcee with two little girls who captured his heart though never their mother’s, who one day walked out of their lives never looking back.  Celeste’s father left her when she was young so she bonds very quickly with Gage’s daughters.  No matter how each tries not to fall in love it is becoming apparent they are until Celeste lets out a long held secret. I couldn’t put the book down because of the constant tension between the two main characters, Gage and Celeste.  While …

War for The Waking World (Dream Treaders #3)

Title:  War for the Waking World (Dreamtreaders #3) Author:  Wayne Thomas Batson Pages:  288 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Thomas Nelson My rating is 4 stars. War for the Waking World is the third and final installment of the Dreamtreader trilogy.  A Rift has occurred and now the Dream World and the Waking World are fused together; everything is in chaos. Archer and his fellow Dreamtreaders are hard-pressed to repair the Rift and restore balance to the world.  Kara, Archer’s ex-best friend, is now the new Nightmare Lord and preparing an army to destroy the Dreamtreaders and claim the world for herself.  What is worse is that Kara is now more powerful than before and has allies working to see that the Dreamtreaders fail to repair the Rift.  Will Archer and his fellow Dreamtreaders be strong enough to defeat their devious and powerful foes? The book was definitely excellent and exciting.  It contained a lot of powerful themes like redemption, not losing sight of why we follow the plans God ha…

Search for the Shadow Key (Dream Traders #2)

Title:  Search for the Shadow Key (Dreamtreaders Book #2) Author:  Wayne Thomas Batson Pages:  336 Year:  2014 Publisher:  Thomas Nelson My rating is 4 stars. The Search for the Shadow Key is a fast-paced fantasy thriller that brings back Archer Keaton to the World of Dreams, but this time facing greater challenges than before.  Archer is now the only Dreamtreader left to prevent a rift from happening, which would merge the Dream and reality together to create a chaotic nightmare for the world.  Dangers, trickery and temptation face Archer at every turn and he must gain help soon or it will be the beginning of the end of the world. What I liked most about this second book is its important themes like making wise choices for the greater good even though they are unpopular choices, resisting the temptation to make wrong decisions with the intent to do good, being a light in a world of darkness, and learning not to lose sight of why God calls us to do the things that He has called us to …

Dream Treaders (Book#1)

Title:  Dreamtreaders Author:  Wayne Thomas Batson Pages:  304 Year:  2014 Publisher:  Thomas Nelson My rating is 4 stars. The story is about a teenager named Archer; he is a Dreamtreader, one of three people God has chosen to fight evil within the Dream World.  Their fight keeps the Nightmare Lord at bay and lets the people in the real world be at peace.  If the boundary between our world and the dream world collapses, then it would mean the end for us all.  Dangers lurk at every turn and there’s more to a new kid at school than it seems. I would recommend this book to others because it is full of adventure.  It takes an interesting perspective about how evil can enter our thoughts through dreams and how people who have accepted Jesus as their savior discipline themselves to fight sin from entering their hearts and the hearts of others.  I particularly liked the messages in the book.  For example, the main character makes bad decisions, which ultimately lead to the next book, but he…

Angel in Aisle 3

Title:  Angel in Aisle 3 Author:  Kevin West with John Fredrick Edwards Pages:  240 Year: 2015 Publisher:  Howard My rating is 5+ stars. It was late one night recently when I started reading this book, and unlike some other nonfiction works this one is very powerful.  I could say because it really was a special man that showed up in aisle 3 of a little corner grocery store.  The story is supernatural in the way the Lord brought together people from different backgrounds, experiences and such.  Don was that man; he wasn’t someone people would at first draw near, living on the street as he did at that time.  But his spiritual life was unlike anything both Kevin West and I for that matter ever encountered. Kevin West shares with us his journey from being a bank executive to a convict to what came after along with all the Lord did during this three year period of his life.  As I read, I couldn’t help appreciate the transparency with which the author shares his life and even more so the w…

A Cup of Dust

Title:  A Cup of Dust (A Novel of the Dust Bowl) Author:  Susie Finkbeiner Pages:  320 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Kregel My rating is 4 stars. Like the author I really don’t remember being taught much about the Dust Bowl.  As I have gotten older and through various mediums I keep learning more and finding works of fiction that share more of what happened.  I cannot imagine having a dust storm that literally turns the day to night and dirt getting into everything no matter how hard one tries to keep it out of the house. Here we meet a family of four that has been surviving the dust storms and sharing what they have with anyone who has need.  Besides most businesses in town being shut down and families moving on, there seems to be a constant and changing influx of hobos.  The one that terrorizes the Spence family is a man named Eddie, and he specifically focus’s all his attention and intentions on Pearl the youngest daughter in the family. Mary is the mother who takes care of the home and…

Faith of Our Fathers DVD Review & Giveaway

Title:  Faith of Our Fathers movie Format: DVD Year:  2015 Publisher:  Pure Flix Ent My rating is 5+ stars. Years ago a small scaled replica of the Vietnam Wall was traveling around the nation, vets who were with the Wall were able to be thanked by many for their service.  To see the equipment, pictures, flags, names on the Wall and other items was a very humbling experience.  When I learned about this film, I knew it would be a very touching movie.  One cannot help but see the names of those who gave their all engraved on the Wall and be changed. At the time, these servicemen came back from the Vietnam War weren’t thanked or seen as heroes and knowing that was beyond my understanding.  Now that my sons are older, they thank anyone they see in any uniform for their service.  Those who weren’t touched so intimately by losing a father, uncle or having them come home perhaps as an amputee have really no idea how hard it was for the remaining surviving spouses and friends.  Sometimes tha…
