The Occupies (A Trevor Black Novel)

Title:  The Occupies (A Trevor Black Novel) Author:  Craig Parshall Pages:  448 Year:  2016 Publisher:  Tyndale My rating is 5+ out of 5 stars. When I first read the synopsis and saw a media trailer about the novel, I wasn’t so sure about reading it. Frankly, it sounded scary and something perhaps geared for men to read as the lead character is a man who of course deals with manly issues.  However, there is more to the book than meets the eye.  I am so glad that I read the novel as there is a deep and powerful message that Craig Parshall has crafted. While there are places where the lead male character named Trevor sees demons and experiences their power or sees how they can influence people, that isn’t all there is to the book.  While Trevor is a disbarred lawyer who tries to explain to a judge why he can’t represent a client because he sees a demon, it is the beginning of a journey for Trevor that really started in his childhood. As I read the story I began to understand that Trevo…

Murder on the Moor (Drew Farthering Mystery #5)

Title:  Murder on the Moor (Drew Farthering Mystery #5) Author:  Julianna Deering Pages:  321 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Bethany House My rating is 4 stars. An old school chum of Drew’s, Beaky Bloodworth, arrives on Drew’s doorstep asking for his detective skills in his home village on the moors.  Drew hasn’t had a mystery for quite a while so he and Madeline are up for the case.  They travel to Beaky’s neck of the woods to try and discover who has been causing some odd happenings around the village and on the moors as well as who killed the old vicar.  Soon after their arrival, Beaky receives a letter from his wife’s old governess, who also lives in his village, stating she had something of importance to tell him.  Before he can talk with her she is found murdered.  Now Drew has two murders to solve, and then there is an attempt on Beaky’s life or is it an attempt on his wife’s life? Drew also encounters mysterious footprints of a massive dog, who the villagers believe is some sort of …

The Butcher of Bear Creek (Sidewinders #7)

Title: The Butcher of Bear Creek (Sidewinders #7) Author:  William W. Johnstone with J. A. Johnstone Pages:  329 Year:  2013 Publisher:  Pinnacle Books My rating is 5 out of 5. On New Year’s Eve, I was searching for a good western to get lost in.  While looking through my Johnstone collection, I choose a Sidewinders book.  I couldn’t put this action-packed, suspense-filled, western/mystery thriller down!  I got pulled into the story from the first page and was really surprised when later in the novel some aspects of the characters’ lives were revealed! Bo Creel and Scratch Morton were returning to their old stomping grounds after being away for years to find themselves looked upon with dread and suspicion.  All either of them wanted to do was go visit their families on the farms, but the way they were received was anything but inviting.  Bo learns the reason for the looks and unwelcome actions of the townspeople that are due to the fact that Bo is suspected of two murders. The longti…

Tidewater Summer

Title:  Tidewater Summer Author:  Jo Huddleston Pages:  232 Year:  2016 Publisher:  Winged Publications My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. Here is a nice novel with romance, a little bit of danger and lots of beauty in the way the main two characters love each other.  Rose is a teacher at the local junior high school and Frank owns his own business.  Rose had a rough experience with a fiancée and needs time to heal; she believes going to a secluded island will be just the answer.  Frank meets her when he is called to fix the water heater at the house she is staying in for the summer. I don’t want to spoil the reading by sharing too much more of the novel.  What I can say is that the novel is clean, faith-filled, and shows how giving God our hearts brings healing.  I think Frank’s character by showing patience with Rose while she worked though her heart issue is a picture of loving someone more than oneself.  Rose’s experience with her previous fiancée is unfortunately part of our fallen …

The Cactus Creek Challenge

Title:  The Cactus Creek Challenge Author:  Erica Vetsch Pages:  317 Year:  2015 Publisher:  Shiloh Run Press My rating is 5 stars. This story is set in 1888 in the small town of Cactus Creek, Texas.  The four main characters are Ben Wilder, the town’s sheriff; Jenny Hart, bakery owner and operator; Carl Gustafson, livery owner and operator and Cassie Bucknell, schoolteacher.  There are some other characters in the story that are used to flesh out the plot as well.  Ben has always thought of Cassie as a little sister, but she has been in love with him for years.  Will he ever see her as more than a little girl?  Jenny is a widow of an abusive husband and has come to town to escape the rest of his family.  Carl is a widower.  Both have declared they will never marry again.  Will Jenny let her fear rule her life forever? Each year the town of Cactus Creek has held a challenge for the local men to participate in that would raise funds for a particular town projects.  The winner of the c…

An Amish Home (4 Novellas)

Title:  An Amish Home (4 Novellas) Author:  Beth Wiseman, Amy Clipston, Ruth Reid & Kathleen Fuller Pages:  400 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Thomas Nelson My rating 5 out of 5 stars. Each novella in this collection is not only written by a different author, but is also a stand-alone story that isn’t interrelated.  First is A Cup Half Full by Beth Wiseman where our hearts are grabbed by the character of Sarah Lantz who had dreams for her future home and marriage when an accident radically altered not jut her life but others in the community as well.  Second, a story by Amy Clipston titled, Home Sweet Home where Englishers Mia and Chace O’Conner accept help to live on Amish property after being evicted from their apartment with a young baby.  Third is Ruth Reid’s novella titled, A Flicker of Hope where the trials endured by Thomas and Noreen King cause them to end up separated for a season in their hearts from each other.  Finally, Kathleen Fuller’s tale titled, Building Faith where we …

An Uncommon Protector (A Lone Star Love Story #2)

Title:  An Uncommon Protector (A Lone Star Love Story #2) Author:  Shelley Shepard Gray Pages:  305 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Zondervan My rating is 5 stars. This is a good, old-fashioned, Western romance set in 1867 for the most part with some flashbacks to 1865.  The main characters are Laurel Tracey and Thomas Baker.  Thomas was introduced in the first book of the series, The Loyal Heart.  The flashbacks take place in Ohio in a Confederate soldier prison camp toward the end of the Civil War. Thomas Baker has really done it this time.  He was caught in a poker game with men much more experienced than himself.  As a result, he owed them a lot of money that he didn’t have; therefore, he was put in jail.  He now faces more jail time unless someone is willing to buy him for one year to work as an employee.  He has no hope for that, but understands he got himself in this situation. Laurel Tracey is a lone female trying to hold on to the family ranch after the deaths of her father and brot…

Control Girl (Lessons on Surrendering Your Burden of Control from 7 Women in the Bible)

Title:  Control Girl (Lessons on Surrendering Your Burden of Control from 7 Women in the Bible) Author:  Shannon Popkin Pages:  216 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Kregel Publications My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. The study is both a challenge to surrender to God and a reminder of who really is in control.  I appreciated the author first sharing transparently her own desire for happiness that she ended up ruining by trying to control well, everything or everyone.  While I can boast in the Lord in the fact He has helped me overcome a lot of my own attempts at control, there are still areas where I am reminded to surrender it all to God.  It’s scary isn’t it?  Letting go and waiting to see what comes, especially when the waiting time for hope to be fulfilled can definitely be an exercise of the prayer muscles!

The study can be done individually or as a small group.  Visiting the author’s website is helpful as there are additional aids for the Bible study.  There is encouragement in the study as…

The Runaway Prophet

Title:  The Runaway Prophet Author:  Michele Chynoweth Pages:  308 Year:  2016 Publisher:  Morgan James Fiction My rating is 4 stars out of 5. Ever read the book of Jonah in the Old Testament?  Jonah is a reluctant kind of a prophet who God told to go to a certain city and preach a message of repentance.  Jonah ran away from his assignment and God used a storm at sea to get his attention.  Jonah was swallowed by a whale and stayed there three days until he was literally thrown up onto a shore.  Yes, I agree, gross.  However, the point being Jonah repented and went to complete the assignment God gave him.  Read the book of Jonah and you’ll quickly see there are other issues in Jonah’s heart. Now what Michele Chynoweth did was take that story and place it in modern times.  What would a Jonah type story look like in today’s world?  Well, what is crafted by the author is a spell-binding tale of a young man receiving instructions from his dying father, but he isn’t all that thrilled to ob…

Breach of Trust

Title:  Breach of Trust Author:  Kathi Oram Peterson Pages:  232 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Covenant My rating 5+ out of 5 stars. The story involves many different threads that come together to form a most intriguing as well as heart-pounding novel of suspense!  Lt. Commander Cooper Lane was a pilot on a helo during a dangerous assignment when her world drastically changed.  When all hope of returning to America was lost a local family in Afghanistan cared for her and protected her at great cost. Cooper’s husband was notified of her crash and after time he resumed life, taking care of his then infant daughter.  Now, Coop has been rescued by a Navy SEAL and in time Cooper wants to reunite with her daughter as she continued to heal from wounds, both physical and mental.  As she sits in her old home talking with Tom, a bullet smashes through the front window and life for Cooper takes a virtual unbelievable rollercoaster ride! Throughout the novel, the writer keeps readers in spell binding…

No Man’s Land (John Puller Series #4)

Title:  No Man’s Land (John Puller Series #4) Author:  David Baldacci Pages:  432 Year:  2016 Publisher:  Grand Central Publishing My rating is 3 out of 5 stars. In what I assume to be the last novel of the series, the missing mother shared with us in the first novel of the series is found.  John Puller, Sr. is a suspect in the disappearance of his wife and John Puller, Jr. is bucking the Army’s orders all the way while still looking to figure out what happened 30 years ago.  It’s more than just his mother’s vanishing that he wants to solve as around the same time that his mother disappeared four other women were murdered in a town not too far away. Until recently, the unsolved cold case of the four women and the missing Puller mother were quietly buried.  Now, John hopes to finally have closure and though his older brother Robert wants him to let it go, John doesn’t.  John’s investigation gets entwined in intrigue, political and military issues maybe even espionage.  All John wants …

The Escape (John Puller Series #3)

Title:  The Escape (John Puller Series #3) Author: David Baldacci Pages: 512 Year: 2015 Publisher:  Grand Central Publishing My rating is 5+ out of 5 stars! What an exemplary novel! David Balducci writes a thriller filled with action, adventure, high tension and intrigue with heart.  In his 3rd book with the main character John Puller the author pulls out all the tops in leading the readers down a road in search for the truth of Robert Puller’s innocence or guilt in regards to treason.  I think to fully appreciate and relish the book one does need to start at the beginning of the series to fully appreciate the Puller family characters with their family issues, careers, health and experiences. All that goes into building each book with a story that won’t let up and leaves the reader wanting more!  While each book can be a story unto itself it is the revelations about each of the Puller family men that enhance each tale.  There is emotion in each book not in the forefront but definitel…

The Forgotten (John Puller #2)

Title:  The Forgotten (John Puller #2) Author:  David Baldacci Pages:  557 Year:  2013 Publisher:  Grand Central Publishing My rating is 4 out of 5 stars. The last time we left John Puller he was riding off into the sunset with an unknown designation.  John isn’t usually a man to do anything without a plan, but this time he did.  He had try and forget or get over the pain of his last mission.  Only time would tell if he would be successful.  Now, Agent John Puller is back, not at his best yet but the day was just beginning.  John will receive a call that will plant his feet on Florida soil in what at first looks like taking care of his aunt, his father’s older sister.  When John arrives, what greets him is another loss.  The longer he stays in Florida, the more clues he finds that something is amiss just like his aunt suspected.  More begins to follow than simply taking care of business in regards to his aunt.  In fact, it’s about to get really dangerous maybe even life-threatening!…

Zero Day (John Puller Series #1)

Title:  Zero Day (John Puller Series #1) Author:  David Baldacci Pages:  448 Year:  2012 Publisher:  Grand Central Publishing My rating is 5+ out of 5 stars. My first novel that I read from this author was a story in another series with the main character being a man named Amos Decker.  After I read those, I decided to try another series by the author and I am glad to share with you how fantastic this novel was to read!  The John Puller series I think is going to be just as thrilling and suspense filled as David’s other novels. John Puller Jr. is in the Army CID.  When an Army Colonel is found murdered, he is tasked with solving the crime.  What at first appearance looks to be a somewhat hard and often trying case to solve turns out to be just the tip of the iceberg!  John ends up in a small town in West Virginia that looks like its dying a slow death, but what occurs thereafter is the uncovering of decades old trouble with new antagonists.  On top of that, John’s father is in a home…

Moving Target (Elite Guardians #3)

Title:  Moving Target (Elite Guardians #3) Author:  Lynette Eason Pages:  318 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Revell My rating is 5 stars. I enjoyed the first two books in this series, Always Watching and Without Warning so much that when I saw the third book was being released, I quickly grabbed a copy.  The first two books focused on Olivia and Katie while this story focuses on the third member of the Elite Guardians security/protection firm, former FBI agent, Maddy McKay. Maddy McKay and Quinn Holcombe have been friends for about four years.  About two years ago, however, Maddy’s feelings for Quinn deepened to love.  She has been waiting for him to express his feelings for her, but fears he will eventually push her away like he has done with everyone else in his life.  They both have baggage from the past with Maddy leaving the FBI under a dark cloud and Quinn seemingly guilty of his sister’s death.  Quinn also has been angry with God over his sister’s death while Maddy still has a close …

Christian Online Study of Romans

We are on break this week and will resume our study the 21st at 7pm and 22nd at 10am in Romans chapter 5!

Deep Water Author: Christine Poulson

Title:  Deep Water Author:  Christine Poulson Pages:  256 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Lion Fiction My rating 4 out of 5 stars. The author has written four other novels prior to her latest book though I haven’t read them.  Deep Water takes place in the United Kingdom and therefore it might take readers a moment to understand the American equivalent.  The story is one of suspense that crosses the scope of science, law, and ethics.  There isn’t a strong theme of faith though it is implied by the actions of one character in particular, which I will let readers discover themselves. It took me a little bit to get involved in the story as some of what was happening in the science community was beyond my purview.  However, as I continued to read more, the tension increased in many ways between characters, the science community and one family in particular.  There wasn’t a whole lot of action or adventure in the book, which I think would have brought more enjoyment. Just so readers know there a …

The Senator’s Youngest Daughter

Title:  The Senator’s Youngest Daughter Author:  Kelley Rose Waller Pages:  322 Year:  2016 Publisher:  Versive Press My rating is 5 out of 5 stars! What if America lost all the freedoms laid out in the Constitution?  What would a person do if their parent stood against a regime and was taken captive?  There are lots of questions that can be formulated when thinking about writing a novel that includes political intrigue, always being watched or on edge because someone just might be ready to strike! Kelley Rose Walker has written a superb novel that puts before her audience an action-packed story with suspense on every page.  Each chapter is only about three pages long, which keeps the story at a quick pace and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.  As I read, some of the plot seemed like it was drawn from current events, allowing me to imagine plausible scenarios.  I was glued to the book for hours because the characters were crafted in such a lifelike manner that it was easy t…

The Dog Who Was There

Title:  The Dog Who Was There Author:  Ron Marasco Pages:  272 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Thomas Nelson My rating 5 out of 5 stars. At first I will admit I was skeptical when I heard of this novel and saw the cover.  It made me wonder if this in fact was a book for children.  I also contemplated if the message of the gospel was in some way downplayed or made cute.  When I first started reading and began to progress in the story, there were hints that the author was leading his audience to some discovery. I appreciated the author’s way of placing the story in the past with what I thought were believable scenarios based on that time.  The descriptions of the various scenes put me right there as an observer, which enhanced my enjoyment of the book.  The makeup of the many different characters, some of dubious means, made for tension and dangerous moments in the plot. I don’t think the book should be read to little children as some things that happen to the dog or people might make them sca…

Beyond Suffering Bible (NLT: Where Struggles Seem Endless, God’s Hope is Infinite)

Title:  Beyond Suffering Bible (NLT: Where Struggles Seem Endless, God’s Hope is Infinite) Author:  Joni & Friends, Inc. Pages:  1696 Year:  2016 Publisher:  Tyndale My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. What makes this Bible different from others already on the market?  It was the first question I asked myself when Tyndale looked for people willing to do some specific tasks.  The goal of the tasks I think was to help people know what was included aside from the Word of God in the NLT and to have time to let God speak to individual hearts as they read. For me, another thought was that we all suffer in some way; some suffering is more easily identifiable than others.  For example, we see someone with a cane and can tell there is a probable physical ailment whereas if someone has cancer, that isn’t as easily seen especially at first.  One of the benefits I got from reading some of the articles included was understanding how some people suffer through their eyes, which I had neither experi…

Desert Secrets (Love Inspired Suspense) Author: Lisa Harris

Title:  Desert Secrets      Author:  Lisa Harris Pages:  224 Year:  2017 Publisher:  Love Inspired Suspense My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. Don’t have much time to read a full length novel at the moment?  Are you looking for a quick read between books?  Look no further!  Desert Secrets is filled with action, suspense, overseas adventure and some romance.  Lisa Harris shares with readers a story about a young woman taken captive in the Sahara Desert and Lexi has no idea why until she learns that her step brother has stolen money from some very mean people who intend on getting it back regardless of the cost. Colton flies planes that help missionaries get into remote areas and bring supplies.  He discovers his brother-in-law is taken captive too.  In time, he finds his brother-in-law and Lexi hoping to end the nightmare for both of them, but it is just beginning!  From the beginning to the end, people will be glued to the intense action to see what is going to happen next to characters…

Deep Cover Jack (The Hunt for Reacher Series #7)

Title:  Deep Cover Jack (The Hunt for Reacher Series #7) Author:  Diane Capri Pages:  292 Year:  2016 Publisher:  AugustBooks My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. I can’t express adequately enough how much I have enjoyed reading Diane Capri’s series.  While there is minimal foul language, there is no sexual content just a real solid story.  Diane spins a thriller in yet another book where FBI Agents Otto and Gaspar have been attempting to gain information on Jack Reacher since no information exists after he left the Army 15 years earlier.  The agents have been involved in some serious situations by just following the orders of their boss while suspecting their boss knows more than he lets on.  In fact, Otto and Gaspar are getting a little tired of the games their boss is playing while not allowing them time to go home or get much rest.  On top of that, they sense they are being played by two higher ups, one in the FBI and one in the federal government.  Otto especially senses that the situ…

Jack and Joe (Hunt for Jack Reacher #6)

Title:  Jack and Joe (Hunt for Jack Reacher #6) Author:  Diane Capri Pages:  250 Year:  2015 Publisher:  AugustBooks My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. Diane Capri’s Hunt for Reacher series continues on in this latest gripping suspense novel.  I sat and read straight through the book as I noticed that unlike others the beginning of the story starts in first person view of Agent Otto.  Agent Otto is alone in her investigation because her partner, Agent Gaspar, is home seeing if his son is about to enter the world.  Otto is a little woman with a whole lot of mettle in her character, mind and spine!  She seems like a spitfire of woman who is brilliant and rarely takes guff from others either in the Bureau or from anyone else. I got hooked because seeing the story play out through her eyes was extremely exciting; knowing her thoughts or actions was like watching a movie.  Otto is waiting for a high level army officer to meet her at a base to reveal all she knew about Reacher.  Otto believes …

Jack in the Green (The Hunt for Reacher Series #5)

Title:  Jack in the Green (The Hunt for Reacher Series #5) Author:  Diane Capri Pages:  164 Year:  2014 Publisher:  AugustBooks My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. Here is a novella installment in the continued search for Jack Reacher by FBI Special Agents Otto and Gaspar.  Agent Gaspar is a Vet who attends with his partner an annual event at MacDill Air Force Base in order to question another member of Jack Reacher’s former unit.  The elusive Tom Weston is on U. S. soil for the first time in years and the agents must question him before his arrest by other agents.  However, the task proves easier said than done. I enjoyed reading the continuing story of two agents tasked with collecting information on Jack Reacher, but who continue to become ensnared with other crimes in their quest.  They must remain off the grid per their boss’s orders so they never can stay to solve these crimes they continue to encounter.  They need to gather enough intel to see how it connects with Jack Reacher.

Get Back Jack (The Hunt for Jack Reacher #4)

Title:  Get Jack Back (The Hunt for Jack Reacher #4) Author:  Diane Capri Pages:  358 Year:  2013 Publisher:  August Books My rating is 5+ out of 5 stars. We meet FBI Special Agents Otto and Gaspar in the first book of the series Don’t Know Jack. Otto is a short woman who is tasked out of Detroit’s office to lead and partner with Agent Gaspar from Miami.  Their mission is not on the books so they cannot use normal channels and must stay under the radar of other law enforcement officials plus a multitude of other things to avoid.  They are to build a file on Jack Reacher and with each novel in the story line they run into questionable characters, missions and Reacher is still in the dark. It appears that any time the agents get close to a subject to question them about Reacher, they either show up dead, missing or engaged in some business that may not be legitimate.  The agents find a lead to begin questioning members of Reacher’s former unit.  Seems easy enough don’t you think?  Yet,…

Jack and Kill (Hunt for Jack Reacher Series #3 A Short Story)

Title:  Jack and Kill (Hunt for Jack Reacher Series #3 A Short Story) Author:  Diane Capri Pages:  90 Year:  2014 Publisher:  AugustBooks My rating is 5 out of 5 stars. Audiences will continue to enjoy the suspense filled story of two FBI agents attempting to build a file on a ghost.  Not literally a ghost, but a man who can’t be found usually until he has already been there or people warning them off of their attempt to find Reacher.  Now Otto and Gaspar are on the road going to locate those who knew Reacher when he was an MP in the army.
However, when they get to a small town they come upon what at first looks like a fatal car accident.  They pull aside to see if it is Reacher under cover on the road, but what they discover has deeper ramifications along with a nationwide manhunt as they weren’t aware of being off the grid themselves.  Many questions remain as to who Reacher is, who wants them to build the file about the man and why.  Along with what will happen to the agents shoul…

Jack in A Box (The Hunt for Reacher Series #2 A Short Story)

Title:  Jack in A Box (The Hunt for Reacher Series #2 A Short Story) Author:  Diane Capri Pages:  100 Year:  2014 Publisher:  AugustBooks My rating is 4 out of 5 stars. Some readers may be tempted to pass up short stories or novellas in a series, but in this case I sure hope readers don’t.  Diane Capri shares tidbits of information that come into play with the main character of Jack Reacher.  FBI Special agents Otto and Gaspar continue their assignment to build a file and locate Jack Reacher as he is suspected of crimes.
Yet, here when both Otto and Gaspar attempt to do some digging into Reacher’s past to find information, they come up with less than stellar success.  Readers will also get keen insight into the lives of both special agents and more mystery as to who assigned them the task and why.  A quick and enjoyable look into the lives of the agents and their assignment.

Don’t Know Jack (The Hunt for Reacher Series #1)

Title:  Don’t Know Jack (The Hunt for Reacher Series #1) Author:  Diane Capri Pages:  340 Year:  2012 Publisher:  August Books My rating is 5 stars. If you have seen the two movies about Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise, then you are at least familiar with the character or perhaps you know the character or story behind the Jack Reacher series via another author, friend or family member.  Either way, I came across Diane’s books when perusing an online store website.  I contacted the author and as they say the rest is history.  I read her latest novel, which starts a new series titled Blood Trails and I wanted to read more to discover how the author crafts the man no one can seem to locate, Jack Reacher. In Don’t Know Jack, two FBI Special Agents are tasked with locating and building a file on Jack Reacher as he has completely disappeared after his service in the army.  Both agent Otto and Gaspar will take you across the nation to find Jack or people who knew him, sometimes coming to a…
