Review of "True to You"

Title:  True to You (A Bradford Sisters #1)

Author:  Becky Wade

Pages:  384

Year:  2017

Publisher:  Bethany

My rating 4 out of 5 stars.

Nora is the main female lead who is a genealogist whose love of fictional novels keeps her in another world.  When she is asked to participate in a staged emergency situation by her sister Britt, she reluctantly agrees.  As noises are happening and then the sprinkler system goes off dousing people, she isn’t sure what her next move should be.  While sitting there a man comes in and picks her up, removing her from the scenario and her heart begins to beat harder.

John seeks Nora out to help him locate his biological family because of a recent diagnosis and time is of the essence.  At first, the book starts out in a way that didn’t really capture my attention at all.  Plus, it is different from other books I have read written by the author.  Now, that is not bad just different and took a little getting used to.

The strongest aspect of Becky’s storytelling is her threads of faith woven throughout the story.  Those threads are highlighted as they are set against a lifelike situation that is heart-touching for Nora and John.  There is a free novella titled, “Then Came You”, which helps set up the framework for this novel. Finding one’s biological parents was a moving part of the tale and though I can’t relate to how one feels about it, I can see why some are looking for their birth mother in situations as in the book.

I have no idea when the sequel will be out, so be on the watch for it after reading the prequel and then True to You!

Driver Confessional (The Driver Series #1)

Title:  Driver Confessional (The Driver Series #1)

Author:  David L. Winters

Pages:  208

Year:  2017

Publisher:  Carpenter’s Son Publishing

My rating 5 out of 5!

What a phenomenal story!  Antonio is in school to become a lawyer and is married with a son who drives people to their destinations to help support his family.  His wife is a teacher who supports her husband and shares her life with her girlfriend Marta.  Antonio prays for and sometimes with his customers as he desires to do whatever the Lord would lead him to do.

There is a mystery that Antonio inadvertently becomes entangled in.  There is also something going on in Congress with a certain bill that people want to pass without many knowing the contents.  Within the pages of the book is an enthralling, suspense-filled tale that will keep you reading until the end!  The way the author ends the first book makes me wonder if the other books will be centered on characters from this story or if they will be different.

At the end of the book is a sneak peek into the next book though no title or date is given.  I plan to watch for it as I really enjoyed this novel from beginning to end!

Title:  A Stranger at Fellsworth (Treasures of Surrey #3)

Author:  Sarah Ladd

Pages:  328

Year:  2017

Publisher:  Thomas Nelson

My rating is 3 out of 5 stars.

Annabelle Thorsley is a pampered gentleman’s daughter who now lives with her brother after the death of her father.  Her brother, Thomas Thorsley, has tried to get them out of the debt their father put the family business in, but the debts keep mounting unbeknownst to her.  She soon learns that her brother has promised a wealthy man marriage to Annabelle to obtain the needed funds to recoup their losses.  Annabelle wants nothing to do with the old, sinister and slovenly man so she hatches a plan for her future with the help of Owen Locke, who happens to be traveling with his boss and staying at Annabelle’s brother’s house.

Owen Locke is the gamekeeper on an estate of a friend of Thomas’ and has been traveling to purchase new hunting dogs.  Owen sees the conditions that Annabelle must live under and agrees to help her escape.  He sees her settled with a relative and can’t seem to stop thinking about her.  She obtains a job and begins teaching Owen’s young daughter at a local school.  Owen has long wanted to purchase his ancestral home and has gotten the landowner to agree to sell if Owen can catch the poachers who are stealing all the game from the land.  Owen knows this is his only chance to become a landowner, but can’t seem to catch the criminals.  He finds some clues and begins to piece the puzzle together while losing his heart to Annabelle.  Can he catch the criminals in the act and gain his land?

I have read the other two books in this series and liked them, but this one just didn’t seem able to hold my attention.  The two main characters couldn’t engage my emotions and the plot was just okay for me.  The faith element was weak for the female lead and just average for the male lead, and I like stories that showcase characters’ faith.  Every once in a while, a reader and an author just don’t click on a particular book and that was the case for this one for me.  I am okay with that and I will read this author’s future writings as I have enjoyed many of her other books.

Triple Time (Blake Meyer Thriller #2)

Title:  Triple Time (Blake Meyer Thriller #2)

Author:  C. Kevin Thompson

Pages:  432

Year:  2017

Publisher:  Create Space

My rating 5+ out of 5 stars!

The action, adventure and over the top suspense continues as Blake Meyer intensifies his attempts to save his family and the country on several fronts.  Blake Meyer is a man trying to hold himself together so he can attempt to locate those who are enemies of his family and America.  Blake’s internal conflict is off the scale as he tries to think as a soldier, agent and father.  The author does a superb job of giving readers clues that might tell us more about Blake as he is complex and much is yet to be revealed.

What happens to his family for me was hard to read as it grabbed my heart and placed it in my throat.  Nothing is told in a way that would cause readers to close the book; it’s a very clean novel.  It’s just the idea of abduction and human trafficking that can be read from everyday newspapers that made the tale more real at least for me.

The possible threat of a mole inside the government and the working of that mole with nefarious other people from other nations ramps up the tension in the book.  The one character I like too is Harrison who knows the Lord and continues to share Him with Blake in hopes it will bring him comfort during his ordeal.  The race of those seeking to do the right thing and trying to get ahead of those who want to wreak havoc and destruction in America kept me turning pages in the novel for hours!

30 Days Hath Revenge is the first book and it is imperative that readers read it before book number two.  To learn more about the author and where he got his ideas for these amazing stories check out:  http://liztolsma.com/2016/12/06/the-story-behind-30-days-hath-revenge-by-c-kevin-thompson/

The third book is due out late this year and you are not going to want to miss the continuing story, action, and mystery!  Grab the first two books and catch up so you’re ready like me to sit down once again and get an afternoon or evening of unbelievable thrills!

30 Days Hath Revenge (A Blake Meyer Thriller)

Title:  30 Days Hath Revenge (A Blake Meyer Thriller)

Author:  C. Kevin Thompson

Pages:  408

Year:  2016

Publisher:  Create Space Independent Publishing

My rating 5+ out of 5 stars!

A couple of years ago C. Kevin Thompson wrote the beginning of this series with a different publisher.  The story started and ended on a cliffhanger that was beyond description as it was written so very well!  Now, here is, in my opinion, an even better start to the Blake Meyer thriller series.  Blake Meyer has been with the FBI for a long time and is looking forward to a desk job prior to retiring.  Blake’s wife and children cannot wait either for him to come home in the evenings to spend time with them.

Now a threat is looming on the horizon or is there more than one?  Is there a mole in the government or more than one?  How come a captured person of interest knows Blake’s name plus threatens his family?  Throughout the story there are veiled antagonists and some unveiled, but who is the one who has pulled all these enemies together to come after the USA?

C. Kevin Thompson has written a very suspense-filled thriller that is quite believable!  It took my breath away as parts kept ramping up the tension all the while I am trying to figure out who is the leader of the threat.  The author does a masterful job of keeping readers glued to the pages and hearts racing.  The pace of the tale is at breakneck speed and with the chapters being only a couple pages it makes the story move along while not losing the reader!

The sequel is already released titled, Triple Time, with the third installment due out later this year titled, The Tide of Times!  Grab these books and get caught up in the story before any more of the Blake Meyers are released as you will certainly enjoy them!  If you know anyone who loves a good story with heart-pounding action, tell them of the Blake Meyers Series by C. Kevin Thompson!

The Joshua Covenant

Title:  The Joshua Covenant

Author:  Diane/David Munson

Pages:  327

Year:  2012

Publisher:  Micah House

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

Bo Rider and his family are sent to Israel for Bo’s job.  His cover is that he is working for the State Department, but he is really still working for the CIA.  His mission is to uncover a mole within the embassy who is passing critical and sensitive information to the Palestinian group Hamas as well as spies for Russia.  Bo is bored with his undercover desk job, but that soon changes as he foils a bombing attempt.  He reconnects with his friend from a prior mission, Mossad Agent Judah Levitt.  Judah tells Bo some fascinating information that gets Bo to thinking about how to catch his mole.

Then, Bo and his father are skiing when another bomb goes off.  Bo and his family are sent home as Bo has become the focus of an internal investigation as someone is trying to frame him as the mole!  Bo hates sitting and not being in action, but it gives him more time with his family.  The discovery of something from his past connects him with a man who has great knowledge of Bible prophecy and tells Bo about Jesus.  Bo has observed the peace and joy his wife has had after becoming a Christian and wonders what it is all about.  Meanwhile, Griff Topping is trying his best to clear Bo’s name.  Can they find the real mole before extremely sensitive information is acted upon?

I have read all the Munson’s books prior to this one, and I have liked this one the most thus far.  There is plenty of political intrigue, espionage, danger and action for any reader.  The events in the story could have been taken from the headlines of any newspaper that it is how lifelike they are.  I also liked that the focus of this story was biblically based.  Bo’s journey certainly takes a circuitous route as he navigates the world of spies, his own family issues as well as coming to grips with God.  Old friends Eva Montanna and Griff Topping also appear in the story, which I liked seeing this trio’s relationship grow deeper.  What a thrilling adventure!

Fatal Illusions

Title:  Fatal Illusions

Author:  Adam Blumer

Pages:  397

Year:  2015

Publisher:  Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas

My rating is 4.5 stars.

Marc and Gillian Thayer are a married couple with a teenage daughter.  Gillian is suffering from depression as she had stillborn twins six months ago, but she has gone back to her calligraphy work as she tries to get back in to life.  She still struggles with grief and it seems her husband isn’t having such a hard time with the situation.  He is a counselor at a local church.  One of his clients, however, becomes infatuated with him so he ceases counseling her.  The client has other ideas and just knows that Marc loves her.  She takes things to an extreme measure that leads Marc and his family to leave town.

While in their new home, Crystal Thayer, Marc and Gillian’s daughter, tries to get involved in the community by joining the stage crew of a local theater production.  Crystal has a wonderful voice and has sung in many musicals and church events.  The lead for the play becomes unable to perform, casting Crystal in the lead role.  This brings her to the attention of someone.  This person begins sending her emails that begin normally, but then begin to become more and more violent, scary and creepy.  Gillian thinks someone is playing a joke on her so she doesn’t tell her parents.  Meanwhile, another victim of the Magician Murderer is discovered, bringing Chuck Riley, homicide detective, out of retirement to try to solve the one case that has been on his mind every day for the last four years.  The latest victim is very close to the Thayer home and Riley enlists Marc’s help to try to solve the murder.

Adam Blumer has written a thriller, suspense-filled story with a unique take on the killer, a magician.  The story kept me turning pages as readers get caught up in the tension as the race to stop a killer takes shape.  I thought the suspense angle was good, but I didn’t really like the character of Gillian until about the last third of the book.  Then, she showed her strong stance on her faith and not giving up.  That was so good to read!  I did like that the characters, especially Crystal, Marc and Riley, showed their faith in their jobs and lives.  These served as great examples of letting the world see Christ and their dependence on Him through life experiences.  Another book, The Tenth Plague, written by this same author also features the Thayer family and takes place after Fatal Illusions.  I am currently reading this second book and will be posting a review soon.  Happy reading!!

Peace in the Valley (Double S Ranch #3)

Title:  Peace in the Valley (Double S Ranch #3)

Author:  Ruth Logan Herne

Pages:  352

Year:  2017

Publisher:  Multnomah

My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.

In the final book of the trilogy, the author treats her readers to a story focused on Trey Walker Stafford.  Trey has been traveling the country, but now his uncle needs a lifesaving operation and Trey could be the match.  Trey’s uncle instructs him to help a local farm family out to pay a long overdue debt, and what comes out of this just might be a budding romance between Trey and Lucy.

Lucy is a single mother who has been running the farm.  Her past has caused her to build a wall around her heart.  Trey’s past has some brokenness in it that causes him to be reluctant to open his heart to Lucy.  Both are searching for peace, forgiveness and a better future if they are willing to let go of their pasts and begin life anew.

Some of the best parts of the novel are reading with bated breath to see if these two main characters are going to risk love and a possible future with each other.  The author does a great job showing how hard it is to walk through a valley filled with pain and regrets in order to get to the other side of wholeness.  The hardest part of the series is knowing this is goodbye to the characters and the Double S Ranch that I have become fond of visiting.

Read the novels and see if you too don’t become attached to the wonderful story within the pages!  The first book is titled, Back in the Saddle followed by the second book, Home on the Range.

The Beloved Hope Chest (An Amish Heirloom Novel #4)

Title:  The Beloved Hope Chest (An Amish Heirloom Novel #4)

Author:  Amy Clipston

Pages:  320

Year:  2017

Publisher:  Zondervan

My rating 5 out of 5 stars!

The end.  Those words are the hardest to read in this series as I have really enjoyed the characters and each one’s tale woven with heart and faith.  The first three books in the series are The Forgotten Recipe, The Courtship Basket and The Cherished Quilt.  In each book, the focus is on a daughter of Leroy and Mattie Fisher with a snippet of the parents’ past that none of the daughters knows.  For years Mattie has been able to keep the past in the past, but now she knows it is time to tell her story to her daughters as they are grown women.

I found Mattie’s story really compelling, especially the fact that Leroy though tempted to give up on Mattie many times, pursued her with such a deep love.  While he does give her time without any contact from him, what it shows Mattie is how much she does truly love Leroy.  The tale shows too how grief has no time limit and much grace with patience needs to be extended to someone who is walking through the valley even though they wish they could be someplace else.

Amy Clipston writes stories of faith, heart and realistic characters which makes readers able to connect with them and keep reading for a long time.  I am an eclectic reader for the most part and am always on the lookout for authors who love to tell a compelling story with heart and this author excels at doing just that and more!  So, if you have never read her books before, this is a great series to begin with.  Beware though as once you start you’ll never want to miss another book again!

Pursued (Nikki Boyd Files #3)

Title:  Pursued (Nikki Boyd Files #3)

Author:  Lisa Harris

Pages:  311 (ARC)

Year:  2017

My rating is 5 stars out of 5.

Special Agent Nikki Boyd is on her way home to Tennessee.  She is flying on a plane when they encounter some turbulence.  The woman in the seat next to Nikki strikes up a conversation and tells Nikki she is afraid.  Before they can continue their conversation, more turbulence strikes and it is discovered that the man next to this woman is dead, then the plane takes a nose dive.  After getting off the plane, Nikki notices that the woman has accidentally left her watch in her seat.  Nikki tries to find her to return it, but doesn’t see her.  She asks for her name of a flight attendant and told that no one was sitting in that seat.  There is no record of the woman being on the plane.  A mystery begins that will take Nikki on a harrowing journey in the next 24-48 hours.

In addition to this, Nikki is to meet Tyler at the airport.  He has returned from overseas just a few days ago after a 3-month contract job.  He has a new job offer in Tennessee, but he and Nikki haven’t had a chance to talk about a relationship or the future.  With this new case of a missing person, Nikki is whisked out of the airport and taken directly to her office to begin the search for the missing woman as Nikki discovers she was supposed to testify at a trial that would have resulted in a famous philanthropist going to jail.  With the search on, Nikki is under pressure to find the woman as well as deal with a personal health issue that might affect her future relationship with Tyler.  How will she survive the next couple of days?  You will have to read this exciting tale to find out!

Whew!  Talk about nonstop action!!  This book starts with a plane crash and never lets up on the adrenaline scale.  Special Agent Nikki Boyd endures more chaos in her life in the span of 48 hours than anyone can shake a stick at!  She has professional trauma as well as personal drama.  It is a good thing she is a Christian or I don’t know how she would keep her sanity.  If you like action, then you will certainly enjoy this very entertaining story from the pen of Lisa Harris.  Nikki and Tyler make an adorable couple and I am so glad that they are pursuing a relationship together.  I have liked her determination to continue investigating her sister’s disappearance for over ten years.  I hope more is revealed in the next book, Vanishing Point, about this ongoing mystery.  This fourth book in the series is due to be released in November 2017 and I can’t wait!

The Good Book

Title:  The Good Book
Author:  Deron Spoo
Pages:  400
Year:  2017
Publisher:  David C Cook
My rating 4 out of 5 stars.
The Bible is more than “the good book”, which is what it was referred to where I grew up, like something real but without power.  Perhaps many still look at it this way; I don’t know.  What I do know is the Bible is the only truly inspired, accurate and infallible Word of God.  The author picks and chooses specific chapters of the Bible that he then writes about with a couple of reflection questions afterwards.
Some of what the author wrote might help new Christians get a sense of what God is saying and how it impacts your life. It is meant to help people know God, it is a starting place, then people can explore the many chapters left in the Bible that has so much to feed on.  I don’t think the author meant to write the book as a shortcut to deeper studies or reading through the whole Bible, so I hope readers don’t use this book in that manner.
If you use this book, consider it as a launching pad not a place to stop and dwell.  The focus should be on the Bible and what God reveals to us about Himself.  The questions are centered on what the Word speaking to the reader and transforming us out from our self-centered culture.  I am disappointed that the book doesn’t really challenge people more, to go deeper or contain a Bibliography that points people to consider their next study. Yet each book has a different purpose for being written as the video shows why this one was written.
So, if you do read the book, read discerningly and always question what is before you.  God, though the Holy Spirit, will teach you what is truth.  He will reveal Himself and teach you about Himself in a manner that will transform your mind.

My thoughts on Robin's novel titled "Twisted Lies"

Title:  Twisted Lies (Hidden Truth Book #2)

Author:  Robin Patchen

Pages:  388

Year:  2017

Publisher:  Create Space

My rating 5+ stars out of 5.

Robin Patchen continues her characters’ stories with the book, Twisted Lies that focuses on Nate who we met in book one, Convenient Lies.  From what Nate experiences in the first tale, we now find him packing up to leave New York and his job to return to the small town where he grew up.  While he has physically healed from his horrible experience, PTSD is making his life hard.  On top of that, Nate believes he is not a hero or much of a man, but a coward.  While many tell him that those beliefs are lies, Nate just cannot seem to break through and understand how others see him.

While packing to leave, he becomes entangled in a way he never wants to become ever again!  Now, Leslie wants him to help her locate her sister, Marissa, who he helped run from threatening danger that was dogging her steps as well as the authorities who couldn’t or wouldn’t believe her to be innocent.

What happens when the sisters meet and the mystery of who took the company’s money brings danger into Nate’s world again.  However, it also brings up the romantic feelings he has always carried in his heart for Marissa.  The race to locate who really stole the money from the company forces Marissa to risk helping her sister who is said to have been threatened if she doesn’t locate and return it.  Once again Nate must decide whether to be drawn into a world of murder, mystery, intrigue and extreme danger or walk away.

The friends of Nate’s we meet in the first book congregate around him and Marissa to help keep them safe and figure out the clues in the hopes of locating the real thief.  It was really awesome to see the team of friends come around to help and support Marissa despite the threat of danger.  They welcome her, care for her and share their stories in hopes that Marissa can bear up under the multitude of threats, loss and grief that seem to constantly plague her life.

I think the author does an absolutely outstanding job of writing a story that will keep people reading plus wanting more books from Robin in the future.  I, for one, cannot wait to see what comes next out of her imagination which she shares through her gift of storytelling.  So, before the next book is out, you best get caught up in the action from the first two books!

My review of Robin's novel: Convenient Lies

Title:  Convenient Lies

Author:  Robin Patchen

Pages:  394

Year:  2016

Publisher:  Create Space

My rating 5+ out of 5 stars.

There are authors who can tell a good story and there are those who tell a story in such a way it leaves readers wanting more.  Readers can tell too if a book isn’t worth reading.  Robin Patchen is more than a story teller!  In Convenient Lies, she drew me into a world where secrets were kept for a variety of reasons, and lies were told as easy as turning on a light switch.  When the main female character, Reagan McAdams, searches out and finds the truth, her world begins spinning out of control.  On top of that her newborn son is the one thing that will make her “husband” continue chasing her around the globe until he retrieves his only heir.

So, Reagan goes to the one person she believes will help her take care of a baby while being on the run.  What Reagan doesn’t expect is her past catching up to her at the same time.  Who can she trust?  I found myself constantly reading and turning pages as the suspense never seemed to wane.  The intrigue and danger with nefarious characters made the tension of the story very palpable for me.  The budding romance and dealing with past issues while trying to stay a step ahead of danger was another thread that kept pulling me deeper into the book.

Readers of suspense, international intrigue, tension, romance, mystery and the fight for justice will have hours of pure enjoyment reading Robin’s novels.  I found too that what one character as she grew older thought she wanted ended up bringing her great heartache and danger.  I loved too how the thrill of reading the story never let up.  In fact, as soon as I was done reading this book I wanted to read her next novel in the series.

The characters continue from one book to the next, the sequel, which is available now and titled, Twisted Lies!  I sure hope the author has another novel planned as I want more stories with these characters that are filled with hours of engaging entertainment!

What a treat for you all today...meet Author Robin Patchen!

The Little Girl Who Wanted to be a Writer by Robin Patchen

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who wanted to be a writer. But this little girl was very nervous and shy. She didn’t talk to adults unless she was addressed directly, and she didn’t make friends easily. And she never, ever told anybody she wanted to be a writer. But sometimes she’d sit on her bed in her blue bedroom with an open notebook and a pencil and feel compelled to write…something.

This little girl didn’t have a single teacher who told her she was a good writer. Once, she worked so hard on a term paper in English, hoping against hope her teacher would notice her immense talent and encourage her to become a writer. The teacher wrote no encouraging notes. The paper got a B+.

When it was time to apply to college, the girl chose a small business school. She’d decided she’d major in hotel/restaurant management, because that sounded like fun and something even she could do. But while pursuing the business degree, sometimes she’d sit on the bed in her doom room with an open notebook and a pencil and feel compelled to write…something.

She would have continued her business degree if not for the pesky fact that freshmen were expected to pass Calculus. The following year, she transferred to a big university, gave up her sort of dream of being a high-powered businesswoman, and admitted that she might like to be a writer.

Still, she was afraid. She was sure she had no talent. Although she entered the journalism program, she pursued not newspaper journalism (which was what she secretly wanted to do) but public relations, which paid better, and anyway, if she failed at that, she wasn’t a failure as a writer, so she felt she could live with it.

She graduated with honors, got a job working in marketing and P.R., and found herself as the businesswoman she’d once sort of a little bit wanted to be. Still, sometimes, she’d sit on her bed in the apartment she shared with her husband, take out a notebook and a pen, and feel compelled to write…something.

She and her husband moved away and started a family, and this woman gave up her job. She met Christ and spent her time raising and teaching her children, managing her household, and being involved in church. Still, sometimes, she’d sit on the bed in the house she shared with her husband, take out a notebook and pen, and feel compelled to write…something.

The woman was given a laptop for her fortieth birthday. One day, she opened that laptop, started a new document, and felt compelled to write something. Only this time, the something came.

A novel. An entire novel. An 800-page novel somehow left her fingers and landed on the screen of her new laptop.

The little girl who was too shy to tell anyone she wanted to be a writer was suddenly a writer.

And now, when she sits at her desk with her laptop, she always feels compelled to write, and the something she needs to write somehow lands on her screen.

That little girl has finally realized her dreams.

Robin Patchen is an award winning multi-published author, but only because she can't pursue her other dream.

If time and money were no object, Robin would spend her life traveling. Her goal is to visit every place in the entire world--twice. She longs to meet everybody and see everything and spread the good news of Christ. Alas, time is short and money is scarce, and her husband and three teenagers don't want to traipse all around the world with her, so Robin does the next best thing: she writes. In the tales she creates, she can illustrate the unending grace of God through the power and magic of story.
