My rating 4 out of 5 stars.

There are now twelve books in the Cotton Malone series and I was introduced to the character and author with book #12.  However, now I am going back and starting at the beginning of Cotton’s career and history.  The Prologue teases the reader as to what the possible story might be with the Templars in the year 1308 and then jumps forward to present day.

Steve Berry is a well-researched author as he begins his novels.  At the end of his books, he helps us understand historical fact from fiction and I love that aspect of his writings.  The book for me began a little slow, but that was because the time referenced in the book refers to one I am not well-versed in.  Nevertheless, I quickly got caught up into the action, danger, and endless movements of Cotton as he goes about unraveling the problem he faces.

Many different factions and people are after what wealth the Templars had hidden during the reign of a ruthless king.  Now the novel leads readers to the highest tension imaginable as the race is on to locate and claim the treasure that many have died pursuing.  In fact, at times it was hard to know who was going after it for good purposes or evil.

The Templars had a code and few had broken it.  Many though may have hidden behind it without truly understanding what it stood for or against.  The next adventure Cotton is going on is titled, The Venetian Link.  Though I have barely started it, this one is fast-paced and exciting!  So join me in reading Cotton Malone’s novels and while we’re at it we may even learn about little known historical facts!
