This is a debut novel that readers won’t soon forget by a brand-new author!  The story begins in the year 1857 in Ohio where a young lady named America, called Merry, attends a college started by Albert Finney and considered liberal for its time.  Originally, America came from Kentucky, which had much less liberal leanings and expected people to stay in their station of life.  Yet, America feels called to go to China even if she must go alone.

William is following in his father’s footsteps, preparing to be a preacher and then go to China.  William’s father and mother are gone and being an abolitionist, he plans on preaching against slavery during winter break in Kentucky.  What he wants to preach about, and the various groups he encounters keeps the story extremely interesting.

America’s father is a former officer who makes future plans with or without Merry’s approval.  William and Merry both are attending the same college and will graduate the same year, but what their future holds is one question that continues during the tale.  I found the author’s ability to tell a story very engaging and filled with action, danger, adventure and twists!

I enjoyed how the author brings Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel into the book and how it was already being widely read or not read.  The antagonist is a man who is used to getting his way and running over anybody.  His rage is taken out on people who he sees as less than human, or even those who are undermining his plans.  His name?  Well, let’s see when you read the book if he doesn’t stand out quickly to you or if you think another character is the antagonist.

A good book to curl up and enjoy!

This whole series is so worth reading! They excel at suspense and grabbing the heart of the reader, pulling them into the plethora of happenings in the book. The series has a total of four books that can be read as stand-alone stories though I found reading them in order helped enhance my understanding of the plot and characters.
The titles in order are: Convenient Lies, Twisted Lies followed by Generous Lies, which comes before this final novel I am sharing my thoughts on today.Robin weaves such a well-crafted plot that brings the reader into the story from the first page, and then keep turning the pages with all the twists and turns in the plot.I felt like I was right there observing what was happening around me even though I was reading the book.
Time flew by quickly and I was unaware of what was going on around me because I was lost in the pages!Right th…
