Wait for Me (Montana Series #6)

Title:  Wait for Me (Montana Series #6)

Author:  Susan May Warren

Pages:  336

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Revell

My rating:  5+ stars out of 5

What an exciting finish to an extraordinary series!  Susan May Warren has shared with readers a story that is engaging, suspenseful, romantic, and very exciting!  We meet the cast of characters in the first novel titled, Wild Montana Skies.  Each novel continues with the same characters though the plot line focuses mainly on one of the PEAK team members.  To learn what PEAK stands for and how the group started, read book one.  I guarantee that once you start with Wild Montana Skies you’ll be hooked on reading all the books in the series.

Each book has a unique way of captivating the reader that makes it easy to keep reading.  Once I started the series, I continued and though I hate to see the ending of the series and characters I know it is time.  I cannot wait for others who haven’t yet read the series to do so, or for others to read the last book in the series as the mysteries in the novels conclude with dramatic fashion!

In Wait for Me, the story mainly is about the relationship between Jess and Pete that has been on and off again throughout the other books in the series.  The books are wonderful in describing how heroic smoke jumpers, EMT’s, police, etc. really are and how they are people who have similar desires and dreams.  Jess and Pete’s story has a mystery element along with Shae and Ned that comes to a climactic conclusion before they all fade into the sunset.

I have no idea how Susan is going to follow up after her amazing Montana series, but I thank the author for writing with a strong element of faith throughout the series.  I loved these books and plan to read them again in the future and see what I probably missed when I read them the first time!  Enjoy reading the series and perhaps gift the books to another reader for them to enjoy as well!

Valiant Defender (Military K-9)

Title:  Valiant Defender (Military K-9)

Author:  Shirlee McCoy

Pages:  224

Year:  November 2018

Publisher:  Love Inspired Suspense

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars

What an exciting series!  Patriotic, romantic and suspenseful!  2018 seems to be the year that many authors came together and wrote a story that is engaging to readers’ hearts and minds.  The titles are Mission to Protect, Bound by Duty, Top Secret Target, Standing Fast, Recue Operation, Explosive Force, Battle Tested, Valiant Defender, Military K-9 Unit Christmas all published by Love Inspired.

In the recent installment, Boyd Sullivan has escaped from jail and begins once again his reign of terror.  However, he is focused on paying back Captain Justin Blackwood and his daughter Portia.  Justin is helped when trains Captain Gretchen Hill in running a K-9 unit where she is stationed.  She is temporarily reassigned to work with Justin and be trained to start a similar unit on her original post when she has completed her training.  Gretchen is also focused on recapturing Boyd, so no more lives are lost.

Once a person opens the book and begins reading whether they have read the other books or not, the tale will most assuredly keep on reading for hours!  I enjoy Love Inspired Suspense as they bring a good story to audiences everywhere and they are quick reads.  If you love faith inspired suspense, look no further for here are books that are inexpensive and fun to sit and get lost for a short time!

No True Justice (Witness Protection #2)

Title:  No True Justice (Witness Protection #2)

Author:  H. L. Wegley

Pages:  252

Year:  2018

Publisher:  H. L. Wegley

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars.

The Witness Protection Series is the third series this author has shared with audiences.  Wegley’s novels are faith based, action packed, and have some romance too.  With each book, this author just keeps getting better.  So, if you have yet to read any of his novels, don’t wait any longer to enjoy!

The opening scene is set on July 4th in Oregon with the character Georgia Simpson walking to her home when she receives a call that will change her life in ways she cannot imagine!  Her quiet and boring life now becomes a race to stay alive, especially when she hears a gunshot on the phone!  Wegley has written a heart-pounding tale that seems very real, and it is easy to get lost in the pages forgetting that what is being read is fictional!

As I read, it seemed that there was a David fighting a Goliath and one that is not going to give up pursuit until he gets the job done!  I enjoy books where I can get lost in the plot, characters, scenes while the excitement builds to a peak!  The third book in the series will be released I hope sometime this year.  Grab No Safe Place and No True Justice to catch up and prepare for what I expect to be either another installment in the series or an exciting conclusion!

Either way, I can’t wait to see what flows next from this author’s pen!

Freedom’s Light

Title:  Freedom’s Light

Author:  Colleen Coble

Pages:  320

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Thomas Nelson

My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.

Hannah Thomas is a young, 18-year-old woman who has been married for a year to a man twenty years her senior.  She married him to escape the unwanted advances of Galen, a childhood friend who she no longer considers to be a friend.  John is a lighthouse keeper but quickly enlists in the Continental Army and leaves Hannah to tend the two lighthouses.  He is one of the first to be killed as a spy.  Hannah doesn’t believe he was a spy, but nevertheless she is now a widow.  She invites her younger sister, Lydia, to stay with her for a while.  Lydia arrives, but has her eye on any man in a red coat serving in the English military.  She longs to wed an Englishman, move to England and enjoy English society.  This will cause trouble for Hannah in the future.

Birch Meredith poses as an English privateer, supplying English troops with supplies.  He, however, has an ulterior motive.  He is looking for the man who killed his brother, so that he can exact his own retribution.  He is secretly serving General Washington as a spy.  His ship runs aground on the rocks close to Hannah’s lighthouse.  She takes care of him while his broken leg heals.  Their conversations are stimulating but she and he will never have a future as he is a Tory and she is loyal to the colonies.  Hannah then makes a discovery that could change her life.

For me, Colleen Coble has a style of writing that is easy to engage with, allows me to learn something new and gives me something to think about.  This novel is no exception.  Hannah and Birch dance around the issue of trust, politics and faith, which makes for an interesting relationship and one I was involved with while reading.  Vengeance also plays a large role in the story as a motivation for more than one character’s actions.  The Revolutionary War, which is the setting for this novel, is one period of time that I find vastly interesting, so I also liked that aspect of the story.  The conflict between family members regarding their support of England or the colonies was realistic.  Grab a copy for yourself and take a journey to colonial America.

A Forgotten Place (A Bess Crawford Mystery #10)

Title:  A Forgotten Place (A Bess Crawford Mystery #10)

Author:  Charles Todd

Pages:  357 (ARC)

Year:  2018

Publisher:  William Morrow

My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.

Bess Crawford is still working in service to the Queen’s military forces as a nurse.  The war is over, but the wounded still need care.  They didn’t just miraculously heal once the war ended.  She is tasked with caring for a Welsh unit that all had amputations.  Most came from the mines in Wales, and with their injuries were not sure how they were going to support their families.  They felt they would have been better off dying in the war and not returning half a man.  Bess encourages them as best she can.  They are all released together for the return home journey.  A couple of months later Bess receives a letter from their commanding officer, himself an amputee, asking for her help.  Several of the troop have died from illness, accident or their own hand.  Bess has some time off due her, so she heads to Wales.  She plans to spend a day or two there and then return to finish out her leave visiting her parents in England.

After tracking down Captain Williams, Bess finds herself on a beautiful but desolate space of land at the furthermost region of Wales.  There are no telephones, mail service, grocery stores or police force.  The small village is not tolerant of strangers.  Once Bess is dropped off by her driver, she plans to leave the next day as a storm approaches.  However, during the night her driver takes off, leaving her stranded.  Bess has no way to contact anyone, and she soon discovers the villagers have a secret they don’t want known.  Bess is now constantly watched wherever she goes.  A couple of men are beaten badly, but don’t know the culprit’s identity.  There are dead men washing ashore and secretly buried.  The village’s wealthy widow seems to visit rarely, but when she does her home is slowly being dismantled from the inside.  What is going on?  Bess has a sense of justice and curiosity that is going to get her in trouble.  Will she end up a permanent resident in the churchyard?

I enjoy the mysteries of Charles Todd because they are so much more than just a “whodunnit” for me.  The deeper thoughts and psychological aspects of the characters are intriguing.  How will a certain character act in a certain situation?  How will Bess react?  I like watching the characters interact and develop along the path of the story, reaching a conclusion with a twist.  Each story can stand alone but does progress in time, so it would be best to start with book one of the series.  Enjoy this wonderful British mystery series set during WWI and immediately thereafter!

Christmas by the Sea

Title:  Christmas by the Sea

Author:  Melody Carlson

Pages:  176

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Revell

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars.

Melody’s tale brings forth hope after loss, and joy after sorrow.  Christmas by the Sea shares about Wendy who has inherited the summer cabin she visited with her grandparents as a little girl.  Wendy is filled with stories and memories she has shared with her son Jackson throughout the years.  Now she has inherited the cabin and Jackson can’t wait to see the ocean and town his mother told him so much about during the hard years of his Dad’s fatal illness.

Jackson wants to stay there, and his mother Wendy would love to as well but there are tons of medical bills to pay and she doesn’t think the small town can provide for their needs.  Jackson enjoys working alongside a man named Caleb who is a local woodworker and owns his own store selling his unique pieces.

What follows is a very endearing tale that was enjoyable to read.  The only other thought I have about the book is I think the author could have written a little more and set the ending up better before just suddenly getting there.  I will read more of Melody Carlson’s books as they are fun to curl up and read.  I hope readers will enjoy her Christmas by the Sea as much as I did!

Year:  11/2018

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars.

One of the benefits of being a member of Reader Services is that I get books to read before they are released to the general public.  Love Inspired Suspense stories are exciting to receive each month, they are tales filled with action, adventure, romance and faith.  Yet, each book truly is a unique story that captures the heart and imagination of those who read them.  They are quick reads and easy to pack because they are small.  The variety the publisher offers makes it hard at times to choose just which book to read next!

In this story, readers are drawn into the world of a nurse practitioner named Alexa Grant who cares for her Amish patients with all her heart.  Alexa loves her work, her colleagues and the area where she lives.  On a day when the weather begins to turn treacherous with ice, snow and wind, a flu epidemic breaks out in the area.  Alexa is waiting for a patient that is late for his appointment, one who normally is on time.  Alexa begins to worry, but then the door opens.  He is coming in when out of nowhere he is shot!

This is the beginning of an adventure that waits for an audience to enjoy!  Alexa’s character is a brave, caring individual whose faith is at the moment shattered.  Grant works with the local police department. The Cost of Betrayal

Title:  The Cost of Betrayal

Authors:  Dee Henderson, Dani Pettrey, Lynette Eason

Pages:  334

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Bethany House

My rating:  5+ out of 5 stars

Unbelievable!  Three truly talented authors write three novellas that are filled with suspense, thrills, faith, action and more.  Each accomplished author has written many novels individually that are truly magnificent to read, so if you’re not familiar with them look up their novels and dive right in!  The three novellas aren’t tied together, and they are unique and mesmerizing!

Dee Henderson’s story is titled, “Betrayed”, and I enjoyed the plot of a couple, one who works for the FBI while the other is a retired police officer who are at an auction.  The couple, Paul and Ann, aren’t seeking anything in particular just enjoying being together without a crisis on their plate.  Of course, that is until Ann chooses a box of miscellaneous items to hopefully set up her next painting scene.  What it does though has set them on a path of discovery of a murder and the woman who supposedly was the culprit.

Dani Pettrey offers readers “Deadly Isle” where two cousins are on an island swimming towards a buoy.  Tennyson and her cousin Julia have raced toward this mark for as long as “Teni” can remember.  When she arrives, Julia is no where to be found.  However, a storm is on the horizon and there is blood on the buoy, a lot of it but no one is around.  Now, there’s a good teaser for this gripping murder mystery along with so much more to the story that readers will get to discover.

Lynette Eason brings to the audience a tale entitled, “Code of Ethics”.  Like Dee and Dani, Lynette is a master of suspense and telling gripping tales.  A surgeon saves the life of a detective who was shot while on duty.  Ruthie goes in to check her patient only to find an intruder there trying to put something in the IV.  The patient, who is a detective, is trying to leave the hospital because he knows his life is in danger. Isaac had reported a fellow officer when he caught him stealing from the evidence room.  While it was the right thing to do, there are those who don’t agree with Isaac, and others who want to kill him.

When I started the book, I kept reading until I couldn’t keep my eyes open to finish, that is until after a refreshing nap!  All three stories are standalones and very well written.  They entertain but they also bring a sense of adventure and will keep you captivated until the very end!  Read, enjoy and tell others you know about this fantastic collection of three novellas!

Amish Christmas Secrets (Love Inspired Suspense)

Title:  Amish Christmas Secrets (Love Inspired Suspense)

Author:  Debby Giusti

Pages:  224

Year:  October 2018

Publisher:  Love Inspired Suspense

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars

Amish Christmas Secrets is the conclusion to the Amish Protectors series.  The previous books are Amish Refuge, Undercover Amish, and Amish Rescue.  Rosie Glick made a poor choice during her Rumspringa and now her past has not only caught up with her, but it may very well cost her everything!  With her life being threatened constantly, she seeks to find a safe place to keep herself and baby boy alive.

Ezra Stoltz is a friend from Rosie’s younger years who comes along to help her when no one else even knows she is back in the area, except for those who want to get their hands on her.  Ezra is carrying around a heavy burden that many are unaware of.  He has a deep sense of guilt and remorse.  Now, as head of the family, he makes the decisions and leads the family, trying to provide for them since the untimely death of his parents.

Between Ezra and Rosie romance may be blooming, but can either of them get past the obstacles they feel are going to keep them apart?  What an exciting and suspense-filled novel that many are going to want to share with family, friends or neighbors!  I hadn’t read the other books in the series when I read this book, but now I plan to go and read the others just for pure fun.

Grab the four books of the series, then settle down and enjoy the romance and danger!

The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond

Title:  The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond

Author:  Jaime Jo Wright

Pages:  352

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Bethany House Publishers

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars.

This story is set in Gossamer Grove, with two stories running simultaneously, one in the present and one in 1907.  In the present, Annalise Forsythe owns a coffee shop and is trying to purchase land to open a food pantry facility as well as offer other services for the homeless.  Her competition wants to use the land to build a sports complex and resort to bring rock climbing enthusiasts to Gossamer Grove.  A big-name draw to help in bringing the rock climbers to the town is Garrett Greenwood, Annalise’s former boyfriend.  They haven’t seen each other in twelve years, and there are definitely old wounds and hard feelings between the two.  Now, they are on opposing sides of this land purchase issue.  An old man in the community dies suddenly, leaving Annalise his property, which amounts to a small amount of land and an old trailer filled with pictures of Annalise at various times in her life, an obituary from 1907, a revival poster from 1907 and pictures of Garrett’s family from the turn of the century.  Why was this man obsessed with Annalise?  She is creeped out but determines to find out who this man was and what information he had uncovered that could possibly link her to the past.  Garrett says he will help her find out what is happening.  Can they get past their wounded hearts and solve the mystery?

In 1907, Libby Sheffield works for and with her father at the local newspaper in Gossamer Grove.  She feels duty-bound to obey her father, even though he sensationalizes the news to sell papers.  She receives an anonymous obituary for a local town member before he dies so she thinks.  She makes a grisly discovery and tries to tell the police about receiving the obituary, but they think she and her father have made that up to sell more newspapers.  She tells Elijah Greenwood, a childhood friend, about her suspicions.  Before they can act, another obituary is dropped off at the newspaper.  This time, they go immediately to the police.  Again, they are rebuffed.  Meanwhile, twin revivalists have staked a tent near Gossamer Pond and are preaching about the dangers of eternity in Hell in a fire and brimstone fashion.  Libby finds one of the twins scary and the other intense, but strangely attractive.  Who is sending these obituaries to her and why?  Do they have anything to do with the revival?

Each story has a mystery, death, secrets and much more.  The characters and the plot will keep readers engaged in the story from beginning to end.  I was drawn in to the story from page one and found myself rapidly turning the pages to see the progress of each story as it built to the apex.  The author writes in the creepy feeling very well, and the mystery element was interesting and captivating.  I couldn’t put it down!

A Tale of Two Hearts (Once Upon a Dickens Christmas #2)

Title:  A Tale of Two Hearts (Once Upon a Dickens Christmas #2)

Author:  Michelle Griep

Pages:  192

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Shiloh Press

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars.

The first book in the series is titled, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor and coming in the Fall of 2019 is book #3 titled, The Old Lace Shop.

Here is a very heart-gripping story of redemption, love and second chances.  The main couple in the books is Mina who helps her father keep an inn and Will who is a law clerk.  Believe me when I say there is definitely more than this to the tale in the pages.

I loved the historical setting in London in the year 1853, along with hopes expressed by Mina and her unending love of reading books!  Her father doesn’t like her reading, filling her head with the thoughts of romance and more but that doesn’t keep Mina from her books.  She has an elderly lady friend who shares her books with Mina and encourages her to read and read.

At a time in history when books were a treasure and not easily procured, it makes me very grateful for the books I get the blessing to read and share with others!  You’ll love how the story reveals the love of God and His constantly extending to us His forgiveness.  How people used to quote books and then see if they could name the story it comes from to the delight of another voracious reader is another aspect of the story that I enjoyed.

With being able to read and either borrow or purchase books, what a gift it is to give to others!  Consider giving classics and new tales such as this book to those you know or maybe a stranger, so they can escape to the world of wonder found in books!

Everything She Didn't Say

Title:  Everything She Didn’t Say

Author:  Jane Kirkpatrick

Pages:  352

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Revell

My rating:  5+ out of 5 stars

Sometimes I am surprised by the revealing of people, events and more I have yet to learn about in history.  Many times, it is the ordinary person living their lives and writing down their memories never knowing that years later someone unearths it again, blows off the dust and engages a new generation into their personal life experiences.

Jane Kirkpatrick reveals to readers a real pioneer of a woman who never knew what her life was going to be like.  Carrie Strahorn married Robert Strahorn in love and with hopes of one day being a mother and living life as most women of her time did, taking care of the hearth and home.  What Carrie experiences is far from what she ever imagined; it was not easy, and it sometimes broke her heart.

In an era when railroads were beginning to expand westward and competition was stiff, sometimes Carrie and Robert had to travel for miles just to get where Robert was to go and collect data.  Robert was an author who wrote books with the aim of luring people out West to tame, grow and bring out of the dust communities where families could set down roots.  While he was good about writing it, it was the way he loved to live that caused Carrie to struggle.  Her faith was what ultimately kept her beside her man and seeing for herself what God had called her to do.

Jane Kirkpatrick is a good storyteller of history who takes it from the dusty tomes she mines and brings it alive, so readers can enjoy the people who inhabited a certain frame of time.  Jane has written many books that reveal such unique people and experiences.  Each one is worth having in a personal library to share with others.

Since there doesn’t seem to be much worth watching, why not pick up this book and enjoy reading Carrie’s story in a fictional setting with the story of the real Carrie told to us in the back of the book?  I guarantee you will want to read more of Jane’s books in the future!

Note:  I received a complimentary copy for an honest review of this book.  The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.

Ours for A Season

Title:  Ours for a Season

Author:  Kim Vogel Sawyer

Pages:  338 (ARC)

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Waterbrook

My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.

Marty and Brooke have been friends since grade school, but for the last several years they have communicated by letters as Brooke moved to Kansas City and Marty lives in Indiana.  Marty is Mennonite while Brooke is agnostic.  Marty is grieving the loss of a child and a future without the hope of having another child of her own.  Her husband, Anthony, owns a construction business and travels to various cities often.  He is trying to escape the mournful face of his wife as it has been over two years since the news of infertility was delivered to them after he suffered through a case of mumps.  He has grieved the loss of their unborn child but trusts God to help him through the loss.  He and Marty have grown apart emotionally, physically and spiritually.  They no longer pray together, and only share mundane conversations when necessary.  Then, a letter arrives from Brooke addressed to both that they must open together.  What’s in the letter will change the direction of their lives.

Brooke Spalding has been a feisty woman all her life.  She is ambitious and has done well financially.  Her latest project has received investor money to bring an old ghost town back to life as a resort.  Brooke knows just the man she wants in charge of renovations…Anthony Hirschler.  Brooke hopes he will agree to head up the construction team and bring Marty along so the two of them can be together away from their community to heal their marriage.  They agree to come, which turns out to be fortunate for Brooke when she receives some alarming news from her doctor.

While the story was interesting, the pace was a bit slow for me.  That is the only negative I have for this heartfelt story of loss, redemption, reconciliation and acceptance.  The three main characters were likeable and expressed realistic emotions.  The deep friendship between Brooke and Marty was so touching!  I loved the idea of taking a ghost town and bringing it back to life, restoring the old crumbling buildings to their original sheen.  This author’s stories always have something unique and interesting about them.  I look forward to her next novel as I know her books are always worth reading.

Formula of Deception

Title:  Formula of Deception

Author:  Carrie Stuart Parks

Pages:  320

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Thomas Nelson

My rating:  5 out of 5

Stunning!  Yes, that is the appropriate way to describe this author’s writing of suspense with many twists and turns in the plot.  Yet, the ending of this particular story really caught me off guard!  A friend of mine has read her earlier works and was telling me time and again how truly amazing the tales were in the novels.  I thought I would get to them one day.  Well, today is that day!

I was engaged in the story line from the first page and thought for sure I would figure out the mystery and all before the end of the book.  However, having never read this author’s writing, I was not in any way prepared for just how the book ended!  I loved the look backward into the history of what was going to impact the present and the future!

Murphy Anderson is a character who really was complex and seemed desperate throughout the story line.  Murphy wasn’t who she claimed to be, but she needed the money the forensic artist work brought.  What Murphy hadn’t counted on was the multiple attempts on the lives of those around her and then narrowing down to her having to face the past again.  Yet, it isn’t the past we read in the beginning of the book.  Confused yet or intrigued?  Either way, readers are going to love sitting down and traveling the labyrinth the novel has within the covers.

I plan on going back now to read her three other books and can’t wait to see what will come next from this woman’s pen!

Title:  Trigger Warning

Author:  William W. Johnstone & J. A. Johnstone

Pages:  384

Year:  2018

Publisher:  Pinnacle

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars

When I received my copy, I loved the cover!  I am part of the Johnstone book club, which will soon be opening in 2019 to anyone who is interested in signing up.  Then, inside the red star are the words “There are no safe spaces”.  I knew I had to read this book immediately.  So, when I started reading the work of fiction, I almost felt like I was reading from a local newspaper.

A former military man named Jake Rivers returns to college to get his graduate degree, but what he hasn’t counted on is the change in the college atmosphere.  Being a bright young man and usually knowing who the enemy he is fighting against, he enters the college scene where political correctness is the only acceptable means of any type of speech or behavior.  Those who showed a different opinion like Jake alerted the college professors and other students that he wasn’t going to adhere to their ridiculous rules.  They try several forms of intimidation.  However, the “powers that be” must be careful of their treatment of Jake as they don’t want his grandfather pulling his monetary support of the college.  What begins to happen is so out of left field that Jake feels as though he must soon decide whether to finish his degree, leave, or pursue something different elsewhere.

Readers of thrillers, suspense, military or political themes will really enjoy the action in this engaging book!  Johnstone has out done herself with this story.  People will want to remember that while it is fiction I could easily see it being real on college campuses today.  Those who love America and the fans of Johnstone books won’t want to miss the latest and best coming from the pen of a Johnstone!

This fourth and final novel in the Chesapeake Valor centers around Katie and Luke’s story.  There is also an interesting side story featuring Finley and Griffin.  I would recommend reading the novels in order as the story of Luke and his disappearance from the Tree House Gang member’s lives is mentioned.  The excitement and action in this story are riveting.  I liked Luke’s character as he made a huge personal sacrifice for his country, although he thought it a selfish adventure.  Even through dangerous and turbulent times, he kept his faith in God.

A former law officer from Miami is now running a lodge on the East Coast.  Her name is Jonna Strand.  Joanna was injured in the line of duty and decided to redirect her life into another venture, hoping to heal from the trauma.  Her former boss hires his nephew to keep an eye on her without her knowledge.  Ian keeps showing up to save Jonna when she least expects it and their attraction is a powerful motivator for Ian to keep Jonna safe from all threats.

I started this book on a quiet afternoon and then finished within a couple of hours.  The novel is very engaging.  Readers will enjoy the faith, romance, suspense and mystery with each page they turn!  If you haven’t read the book, you can as it releases September 2018.  So, purchase it and enjoy!  Then, consider sharing it with family, friends and neighbors or any one you know who loves a good book.
