Title: Hell Town (The Last Gunfighter #16)
Author: William W Johnstone
Publisher: Pinnacle Books
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Frank Morgan is the sheriff in a town called Buckskin where what was once a dying boom town is reviving! The background to what occurs in the tale starts in the previous book titled Avenger, where Frank chases down the man responsible for the death of his first wife, Vivian. If you’re not familiar with the character Frank Morgan, known as the Drifter, don’t despair as the author does a fantastic job of writing the story so readers quickly become engrossed in the action!
As Frank Morgan’s whereabouts become known, there is the occasional challenge to his prowess with a gun in Buckskin, and most end up on Boot Hill. Frank and his deputy are trying now to keep the peace between various mine owners as tensions rise when “accidents” at competing mines are on the rise. Not only is there tension from what seems like sabotage at two of the mines, now the owner of the one successful mine has come to town and is running roughshod over folks.
The author does a masterful job of adding another element to the story by revealing that a gang is waiting to take over the town when the time is ripe. When all the elements come together at the same time, the climax is palpable and makes it impossible for a reader to put the book down! There are hints of possible romances between a couple of the leading characters, and it could be that Frank will once again drift. Either way, this is one high octane western adventure that audiences will not regret reading and sharing with other folks!
